Muqdadiyah

Muqdadiyah (Arabic: المقدادية) (also transliterated Al-Muqdadiyah, Muqdadia, Miqdadiyah) is a city in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq.
This city was a part of the Persian Sassanid Empire and had the Persian name Shahraban, meaning the satrap. The name is still used locally, although as of late, the term Muqdadiyah--"given by the Magi" (a Zoroastrian priest) has largely replaced the old name, Shahraban, but not completely.
The city is located at , about 80 km northeast of Baghdad and 30 km northeast of Baquba, the capital of Diyala.
It has a population of about 280,000 inhabitants, with a majority of them Sunni Arabs. Other inhabitants are the Kurds, Turkomans and the Shia Arabs.

Muqdadiyah is the site of Camp Normandy, a US military base [1].
In December 2007, the town was the site of a suicide bombing which killed 16 people and wounded another 27 [2]. The target was a local Awakening group
