Monument Mall

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monument Mall is a shopping centre in central Newcastle, England. It opened in 1990 adjacent to the Monument station on the Tyne and Wear Metro. It is also directly in front of Grey's Monument and Grey Street, and has an entrance on Northumberland Street.

Open seven days a week, Monument Mall has three floors of stores and is home to a variety of national and independent retailers offering a large range of products. These stores include TK Maxx, Newcastle United Official Club Store Imag-e-nation and JJB Sports. The Mall also has entrances to Fenwick and Zavvi (formerly Virgin Megastore), both of which were in existence prior to the construction of the mall.

There are shops on the lower ground floor TK Maxx, Toni & Guy and Imag-e-nation. Ground Floor tenants include Newcastle United, Art, Millie's Cookies and Evans, while JJB Sports occupies the entire first floor. The whole of the top floor is given over to the under-the-dome Food Court. Small independent stalls featuring jewellry and other accessories can be found near the esculators at ground floor level,

The Mall opens from 8am-6pm every day except Sunday, when Sunday trading laws restrict opening times to 11am-5pm.

[edit] Vacancy Rates

The Mall has recently seen high vacancy rates with the closure or re-location of key stores such as Boots, Benetton and Sportizus. With the redevelopment of nearby Eldon Square and Eldon Gardens providing larger and more flexible options for retail premises it is unlikely that these vacancies will be filled in the near future.
