BANGALORE: An advanced non-invasive tool to measure the thickness of the retina is finally available in a government hospital.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT), which serves both diagnostic and prognostic purposes, was launched on Thursday at Minto Ophthalmic Hospital, the first state-owned hospital to provide this equipment.

OCT is used to measure the thickness of the retina in patients suffering from several eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy and age-related degeneration. With OCT, which cost the hospital Rs 40 lakh, it becomes easy to make decisions regarding management of the different stages of diabetic retinopathy and related retinal disorders.

Of the 80-100 patients who visit Minto four days a week, nearly 30% suffer from diabetic retinopathy. Patients with this disease will have to undergo laser treatment, intro-vitreol injection or vitrectomy, depending on the degree of retinopathy.

Medical superintendent and HoD (ophthalmology), Minto Hospital, Dr K S Shriprakash, said the facility will be offered free of cost to poor patients, while others will be charged Rs 300 per eye.
