Mike Kelly (politician)

Colonel Dr Michael Joseph "Mike" Kelly, AM (born 23 February 1960), is a former Australian Army lawyer turned federal politician.

Kelly's educational qualifications include BA, LLB and PhD. He joined the Army in 1987, served in Somalia, East Timor and Bosnia, and was among senior Australian military personnel in the Iraq War. He finished his military career as Director of Army Legal Services in 2007.

In the 2007 Australian Federal election Kelly stood as the Australian Labor Party candidate in the marginal NSW country seat of Eden-Monaro, regarded as a "Bellwether Seat". He was successful, defeating the sitting member Gary Nairn of the Liberal Party of Australia.

In the inaugural caucus meeting of the Rudd Labor Government on 29 November 2007, Kelly was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Defence.

He is married to Shelly and has one son.
