Michigan History magazine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michigan History is the colorful, high-quality magazine dedicated to the history of the Great Lakes State.
Michigan History magazine traces its roots to the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Collections, an annual, single-volume publication first published in 1874. With publication of bolume 40 in 1916, the Pioneer Collections ceased production. The following year, the Michigan Historical Commission, organized in 1913, introduced Michigan History magazine. For sixty years, it was a traditional academic quarterly publication. In 1978 the magazine converted to a popular magazine format and became a bimonthly publication. In 1978, Michigan History had 5,000 subscribers. It has since grown to over 25,000 paid subscribers.
Every issue tells exciting stories of Michigan people and places, is filled with bold illustrations and colorful photos and highlights history-related books and places to visit.
In 2001, Michigan History launched the premiere edition of Michigan History for Kids magazine.
Michigan History for Kids began in 2001 as a free publication to all fourth grade students in Michigan (over 180,000). State budget restraints forced it to become a subscription-only magazine in 2004. Since then, the magazine has grown to serve more than 7,000 children throughout the state.
In 2002, Michigan History for Kids won an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. In 2005, it won a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award for a magazine that “exceeds standards set by educators…parents and kids.” And in 2006, it won a Parents' Choice Approved award. The magazine continues to be a hit with kids, parents, teachers and students.
Michigan History also produces a variety of Michigan heritage books, including “Fort Wilkins, Yesterday and Today,” “Michigan Soldiers in the Civil War,” “Father Marquette’s Journal,” “Makin’ Music: Michigan’s Rock & Roll Legacy,” and “African Americans You Need to Know.”
Michigan History is published by the Michigan Historical Center. The Michigan Historical Center is an agency of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries. Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Michigan, the department also includes the Mackinac Island State Park Commission, the Library of Michigan, the Michigan Film Office and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
