[edit] Notes

  1. The figure is derived from ridership of two operators in Seoul: Seoul Metro 1,061,532,456 (Jan 2006 ~ Dec 2006)[21], and SMRT 592,882,234 (Jan 2006 ~ Dec 2006)[22]. This figure counts only gate-passers, so it only includes the two systems' riders. Passengers from Incheon Subway, Korail metropolitan railroad system and A'REX are excluded. (2.279 billion if all included)
  2. Intercity, Light Rail & Feeder Bus excluded. MTR Lines, Airport Express and Cross-boundary (not to be confused with Intercity) included. The latter two lines are urban, electric mass transit railways within Hong Kong, completely independent from other traffic, and with high capacity and service frequency (6-12 minute headways).
  3. Does not include ridership on Docklands Light Railway (60 million), London Overground and National Rail journeys within Greater London.
  4. The data of Shanghai and Beijing came from Statistics China.[citation needed] According to theirs metro pages, it seems to be so low.
  5. Japanese rapid transit systems are mostly neither metros nor "subterranean" as opposed to European systems. For total rail transit ridership, Greater Tokyo (130 lines) and Greater Osaka (70 lines) transport far more daily passengers than anywhere else on earth.
  6. The Tokyo subway network is made up of two separate operators: Tokyo Metro, a private company, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation, a government agency.
  7. The figure for Paris only includes the "métro". Traffic including the RER lines operated by the RATP reaches 1863 million passengers yearly.
