Mercyhurst Preparatory School, commonly called Mercyhurst Prep or MPS, is a Catholic, coeducational secondary school located in Erie, Pennsylvania. In the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, the school is located behind Mercyhurst College on East Grandview Boulevard. It is a member of the International Baccalaureate program.
[edit] History
Mercyhurst was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1926 as a college, high school, and grade school for women. The grade school was eventually done away with, leaving the high school and college. In 1963, Mercyhurst Seminary opened a new building on East Grandview Boulevard, which became Mercyhurst Preparatory School. The college remained and became Mercyhurst College. Mercyhurst Prep started admitting men in 1974. The boys and girls basketball teams won PIAA Championships in the same year, 1991. In 1993, the building was renonvated and a new gymnasium and auditorium were built. The girls' tennis team has had multiple championship performances on both the regional and state level, bringing home titles in both singles and doubles. On November 23, 2007, the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers' football team, currently playing in Class A, won their first ever Distrcit 10 title, beating Mercer 21-19. In 2008 the girls' basketball team made it all the way to the PIAA State Championships, and brought home the silver medal.
