I assume you know Chinese. If this is the case, I would like for the articles Tao Ren and Tao Jun (on fictional characters in a comic book) to have the "proper" Hanyu Pinyin romanizations for their names. WhisperToMe 01:41, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Done. These names are fake romanizations. They look like Wade-Giles, but then, in WG, "Tao Ren" = "Tao Lien" (PY: Dao Lian). And "Tao Jun" = "Tao Jen" (PY: Dao Ren). --Menchi 06:05, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I came across User:ClockworkTroll/Name the Admin Candidate just now and was truly impressed by your willingness to compromise for the community's sake. Not everybody would be willing to take a step back during such personal debates, as I've witnessed before at the RfA. I don't really know you, but I hafta say that what you did there was very admirable. That act alone showed your sincerity and coolheadness, hence your adequacy as an admin. So, here's a belated symbolic vote of support. WP has way too much stubborness and closed ears. I'm glad to see a sign of WP's friendly and cooperative spirit again. Good evening. Back in October 2003, you added Zenichi Shimbashi to the list of notable Japanese Canadians. Since then, an anonymous user created an article for Zenichi Shimbashi. This anonymous user has a history of vandalism. I am, unfortunately, having to go back and challenge every non-reverted edit from that IP. Good idea about reducing the Mt. Fuji etymology. Actually though, if you look at the archives, you'll see that original all that information was in Mt. Fuji but not Taketori Monogatari. Taketori was a bit of a stub. I moved all that information over to Taketori, but never got around to summarizing the information on Mt. Fuji. [edit] Mandarin Promotion Council

Hullo! Do you know any good books or websites (or anything else) where I could read up on the Preparatory Commission for the Unification of the National Language (國語統一籌備會), especially on its decision to promote Mandarin as the guoyu?

A friend of mine claims that Mandarin was chosen based on its relative "simplicity" (whatever that means), whereas I opined that it was due to its being used as the guanhua for much of Qing times, its standardization and widespread teaching through the zhengyin shuyuan and its finally being declared the national language in the early 20th century. Do you know anything that can shed some light on this?

I did that article so long ago...so I don't remember any specific websites I got the info from.
Re: simplicity. I agree with you. It's just what the Qing had been using in its capital, Beijing. It's also interesting to note that Mandarin not really the native language of the ROC leaders. Dr Sun Yat-sen was from the Cantonese-speaking region, and Chiang spoke the Ningpo dialect at home. Hi Menchi,

I have a small request that perhaps you can help with. At the Vietnamese Wikipedia, there is an article about a historic document that was originally written in Han characters. Since we only have the quốc ngữ transcription of the text, we had to reverse-transcribe the text into Traditional Chinese word by word. Since none of us can read the Chinese characters, it's prone to mistakes. Would you read over the article vi:Chiếu dời đô (the Chinese part) and let me know if it makes any sense? [edit] copyright of images on the commons.

Hey, I just posted a message for you (in French, since your page said that was your first language) concerning the copyright of an image you'd uploaded. You should tag your images , and be advised that one cannot restrict the use of an image to wikipedia projects and place that image on the commons. You can restrict the image to wikimedia use and put it on wikimedia projects individually, but such a license is non-free and thus unacceptable on the commons. I hope this clears matters up. Hi Menchi. On this page [2] you gave something that could be useful rules for pinyin. I'm currently discussing the topic because I renamed Feng-Kan to Fenggan (buddhist name). The problem I don't understand is that the article page on transcription has been moved to Romanization, and I don't find a fixed guideline for Pinyin names. Hi there. I am considering changing the redirect for Ptolemaic found here to a disambiguation page for Ptolemaic, distinguishing between Ptolemaic dynasty and Ptolemaic system and also Ptolemy, plus other uses if I think of them. I clicked on the "What links here" for the current redirect (see here) and there is a list of about 43 links, not all of which should be redirecting to Ptolemaic dynasty (which is where the redirect is currently pointing). Hi. Thanks for your message and comments. Glad you like the episode summaries — I set myself a maximum of eight lines for each one (on my monitor) when I started writing them, and it seemed to work so I just carried on! With regard to "Seasonal Forests", having checked the Planet Earth DVD with the subtitles on, I can confirm that DA does indeed say "home" in that episode. It seems he is referring to either the British Isles or otherwise mainland Europe. Hope this helps. :-) Chris 42

I'm contacting you because of your record of contributions in the edit history of Japanese yen.

An exchange of views at Talk:Japanese yen#Etymology is developing. Attention is focused on two sentences only:

En literally means "round object" in Japanese, as yuan does in Chinese, referring to the ancient Chinese coins that were circular in shape and widely used in Japan up to the Tokugawa Period. In 1695, the character 元 (ghen), signifying "round or rounded") was placed on the obverse of copper coins.
The reference source for this fact is:

As I understand it, other editors are incredulous, suggesting that this data is likely to be spurious because confirmation is not readily found in conventional numismatic reference books which concern themselves with coins in general circulation during the Edo period Tokugawa shogunate in Japan.
