Melrose Golf Club is a nine hole par 70 with a Standard Scratch Score (SSS) of 68 [1]. The course is situated at the foot of the Eildon Hills near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, Scotland[2]. Although there are only nine holes at Melrose Golf Club, two of the holes have alternative teeing positions for use on the second nine. These holes are the eleventh and the sixteenth [3].
The course at Melrose Golf Club is very undulating and hilly due to its proximity to the Eildon hills. The fairways are lined with trees on almost every hole ensuring that tee shots have to be consistently accurate at Melrose Golf course to avoid losing balls. The yardage of the Melrose Golf Course may be short but the tight tree lined fairways and hilly terrain ensure that the challenge is greater than the yardage may suggest[4]. An example of this is the signature hole, the fourth, which may appear easy at only 343-yards for a par four, but it has a sharp dogleg left that cannot be cut and a steep elevation change from the tee to the green [5]. Both these factors make the hole extremely difficult.
Similarly, the longest hole on the course, the par four eighth, has an extreme left to right sloping fairway that draws your ball towards the rough on the right, requiring careful drive placement. This makes the approach shot similarly tricky as the ball is always well below your feet[6].
Melrose Golf Club has a club house with a bar, which is mainly open in the evenings during the summer months[7] . There are also men's and woman's changing rooms within the Melrose Golf Club, club house in addition.[8].

[edit] Course redevelopment
In recent years the course has seen some major changes to increase the difficulty and place more focus on environmental issues[9]. The main changes have seen the addition of large water features on the fourth, fifth and ninth holes. The fourth hole has had a stream added to it that starts on the higher tier of the fairway on the right hand side then down the slope and across the mound that creates the two tiers of the fairway. It then travels down the left of the fairway near the tree line and joins an existing ditch. The fifth has had a large pond created up the left hand side and a wide deep stream along the front of the green. The ninth hole has had a pond created on the left of the green and a burn feeding this which cuts across the fairway about fifteen yards short of the green.
[edit] Competitions
Competitions are normally run on Saturdays and are competed over eighteen holes during the spring and summer months. As well as the strokeplay competitions there are a number of matchplay competitions that take place during the season, which are contended through the week. The most prestigious prize in the season is the club championship which consisists of two stroke play qualifying rounds then a set of matchplay matches. There are Three classes of championship, the A,B and C class's, with the A class being the premium event.
