Melhus is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.
Melhus was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Hølonda was separated from Melhus in 1860. Flå was separated from Melhus in 1880. These two were, however, again merged with Melhus January 1, 1964. Horg was merged with Melhus the same date.
Agriculture is important, and the extensive lowland areas in the almost flat valley near the river Gaula are dominated by grain fields. Many inhabitants work in the city of Trondheim, a 20 min. drive northwards from Melhus.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Melhus (Norse Meðalhúsar), since the first church was built there. The first element is meðal 'middle', the last element is the plural form of hús n 'house'. The farm is one part of a greater and older farm, which had the name Óðinssalr 'the salr (mead hall) of Odin'.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1979). The figure represents the famous archer Einar Tambarskjelve, who was from the district.
