jbolden1517 (talk • contribs) I am an active member of the Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal and have taken about 20 cases for them. I thus have a large proven track record of stepping into difficult wikipedia mediations and making progress. I can provide recommendation if desired from mediation cabal cases. In real life I am project manager and have line manager experience as well as extensive vendor negotiation experience so I can bring non wikipedia experience to bear as well. I am relatively new and not an administrator, my edit count is still under 1000 (though its getting close) so I'm running on my mediation experience. As another aside I was a lite BBSer from 1984 on and was on usenet from 1988 (heavier use) and the internet from 1991 so I have substantial internet/web forum experience.

I'm an atheist and my favorite cases are religious ones which is usually a substantial advantage as both sides recognize that as being clearly neutral. Religious disputes come up quite often and are some of the most heated, so I'd assume they take a disproportionate share of the mediation committee. In a previously life I was a mathematician so I can take mathematics or physics cases (physics seems to come up a lot on mediation cabal surprisingly). Obviously on complex rules questions (questions of law rather than questions of fact) I would need to kick these back to the committee and I wouldn't be a good choice for those now, but in say 6 months that will likely change.

Mediation committee:

• Oppose. User's conduct recently has been quite disturbing. A user who I trust completely has raised issues about jbolden1517's work on the Mediation Cabal, and his response is out of line. Mediators need to keep a cool head at all times, and jbolden1517 has shown he can't. Ral315 (talk) 20:20, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
• Support From reviewing comments below and experience on MedCab, am fairly happy. Oppose, per Ral's thoughts above, I too have learnt about this conduct of the user, and would not now support him in his nomination. --Wisden17 17:41, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
• I have concerns about jbolden's views on confidentiality, neutrality, and the role of mediators. Unless I can be fully reassured that he would understand the necessity for a mediator to honour these principles, including after a mediation or attempted mediation, I am firmly against him being a mediator on Wikipedia. -- sannse (talk) 20:02, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Outside opinions:

• I believe Jbolden's methods of mediation are very productive and do conform to the formal nature of the Mediation Committee, so he would be well suited to it. (If outsiders can support, then Support. Cowman109^Talk 02:35, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

• The Mediation Cabal is a lot different than the Mediation Committee. I'm extremely pleased by your work there, but I'm wondering- how will you adjust from the MedCab, where cases are relatively easy and you can take many at once without becoming overworked, to the MedCom, where cases tend to be longer and tougher? Well as I've mentioned professionally I've been involved in vendor contract negotiations. The longest I was involved in took 27 months and involved 1000+ hours of my time. If you'd like to see a complex issue with lots of sub-points which I'm handling the Every Nation one is fairly detailed and public. For one involving over 10 people Ecademy. Unfortunately lots of it occurred in email but you can see the revert wars stopped and they all ended up agreeing on "rules". In terms of adjustment I'd take less cases if each one was much more labor intensive. As I see it you have the plusses and minus of more experienced editors. Their problems are more complicated on the other hand they are more committed to the process. jbolden1517^Talk 14:28, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
