[edit] Basque whaling in the New World

Exactly what archaeological and documentary evidence is there for Basques reaching Newfoundland and Labrador in the 14th century? All I know of are claims made by authors writing centuries after the fact. The only archaeological evidence I know of comes from the 16th century. Until someone proves the Basques began whaling at this eariler date, the sentence will stay reverted. Jonas Poole (talk) 01:08, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] John Cabot sighting Basque vessels off Newfoundland in 1497?

Really? Can someone provide a contemporary source for this? If one is not provided before monday, I will be deleting it. Claims made by authors writing years after the fact don't count. Thanks. Jonas Poole (talk) 04:02, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Yes, again

The two sentences tagged will be removed unless someone provides contemporary sources or first-hand accounts of such events. Good luck finding the latter. Secondary sources that don't provide notes/references can not be used. You have until friday. Jonas Poole (talk) 22:49, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
