I've read seventy books on whaling history, as well as countless papers and articles. I've also read over sixty books on marine life, and a few on maritime history.

My focus is on bay whaling in Svalbard and Jan Mayen, as well as open-boat and modern whaling on the west coast of North America, particularly California. I'm also interested in obscure or small-scale whaling. For example, shore whaling in Vanuatu (New Hebrides), Hawaii, Brazil (open-boat era), North Norway, Bermuda, and Turks and Caicos Islands. Any whaling done in remote areas or in harsh environments I find of interest as well, particularly the isolated settlements that developed in those areas, such as Smeerenburg, Herschel Island, the stations on South Georiga and Deception Island, and elsewhere.
