Mateusz Sołtanowicz

Mateusz Sołtanowicz (1 May 1878, Saltoniškės - 11 November 1939, Vilnius) was a Polish officer.

Mateusz Sołtanowicz was born in a family palace in Saltoniškės (nowadays a suburb of Vilnius). In 1914 he joined Polish Legions. In 1918[citation needed] and 1919 he was fighting with Lithuanians and Bolsheviks for Vilnius. After the capitulation of the city he escaped and joined Polish army fighting in Polish-Soviet war. He was avarded by Virtuti Militari and Krzyż Walecznych and also became a colonel of Polish Army.

In 1908 he married Natasza Kuropatkin, a close relative of Alexei Nikolayevich Kuropatkin. He had with her 3 sons and 2 daughters.

He died on 11 November 1939 in Vilnius. Mateusz Sołtanowicz and 32 other Polish soldiers and officers were killed by Lithuanian[citation needed] soldiers during the celebration of Polish Independence Day.[citation needed]
