Mashed Potatoes is a 5-disc set of rare and unreleased songs by The Smashing Pumpkins. The set was put together by Billy Corgan who distributed nine copies of the set to friends, management, and other band members as gifts in 1994. The set has never been officially released, but has been heavily bootlegged.

[edit] Stolen copy
Around February 1995, D'arcy Wretzky's copy was stolen from her vacation home in Michigan City, Indiana. The thief sold the discs to a local store, and most were later recovered by police. Although the discs were made up of many studio and soundboard quality tracks, the official press release stated that the discs were "worthless practice demos containing scratchy bass lines and D'Arcy telling jokes." This information was repeated in numerous news sources at the time.[1]
[edit] Notoriety and release
After its release, the set gained notoriety amongst fans of the band. The set's extreme scarcity, coupled with the rapidly expanding bootleg trading scene on the Internet caused the set to become one of the most rare and sought after bootlegs of the band.
In December 2002, eight years after Billy Corgan first put the set together, the entire 5-disc collection was leaked onto the Internet. The only pictures of the set's packaging to emerge feature simple white covers with handwritten tracklistings by Billy Corgan.
