When was Martin Carthy born? There are roughly as many websites claiming it was 1941 as there are sites claiming that it was 1940.

Yes, I deliberated over that myself when adding it. But then I found a reference to him having a concert for his 60th birthday in 2001, so I figured that was probably right. Unfortunately I just searched and found a reference to the 60th birthday concert in 2000! I'll do a little more research and see if I can figure it out. Everyking 07:52, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

OK, I did a Lexis Nexis search and I found an Observer music review from May 20 2001 which talks about his 60th birthday concert and mentions that his 60th birthday is "tomorrow" (May 21). So I guess that pretty much confirms it. Everyking 07:57, 16 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re-write required

I really do think this whole article is in desperate need of a total re-write. Carthy deserves much better than this - check out the articles on his near contemporaries Bert Jansch, Davey Graham and Richard Thompson for examples of articles that start to do their subjects some justice (the Jansch article is particularly successful and is currently A-Class rated). Here the chronology is confused, with great chunks of Carthy's career missing or virtually ignored (there's hardly anything of his post early-70s solo career for example).

If no-one objects too strongly I intend to make a start on a re-write, utilising elements of the current article where necessary, adding more detail throughout, firming up the chronology and generally creating some structure. Kevin Boyd 01:06, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

I was considering tagging the article with the {{peacock}} template as I think it needs to be a bit more objective in places. I'm thinking of phrases such as "has remained one of the most influential figures", "inspiring contemporaries such as...", "a renowned solo performer" and a couple of other less obvious ones. These definitely qualify as "peacock" terms by the WP definition but I've refrained from adding the tag at the moment as I still intend to do a big clean up per my previous message. I also cringe ever time I read the phrases "accompanying himself on his trusty old Martin Guitar" and "Carthy has enjoyed a creative partnership with" and as soon as I get round to doing the clean up this I'll remove these tooKevin Boyd 01:58, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
