Confederate Brigadier General William Montague Browne (1823-1883) of County Mayo according to Ezra J. Warner's Generals In Gray {.p.368 note 74} had a unconfirmed report that reportably he was a nephew of Earl of Sligo. However on website Find a Grave W.M.Browne father is given as D. Geoffrey Browne MP -related to the above ? {For reference only}
- The closest I can find is that Margaret Browne, daughter of Hon. George Browne and granddaughter of the 1st Earl of Altamont, married a "Dominick Geoffrey Browne" (d. 1826), who had a son named "Dominick Browne", 1st Baron Oranmore and Browne and sometime MP for Mayo. However, Burke's Peerage does not list William Montague Browne among the issue of any of either the Sligo or Oranmore Brownes, and it covers the correct time period. Interestingly, "Confederate Military History" contradicts Findagrave and reports W.M. Browne as being born in Dublin. This supposed connection strikes me as highly suspect. Has anyone thought of the possibility that the said William Montague Browne was disinherited or even possibly an illegitimate son of the said Dominik Geoffrey Browne. Abrowne123 13:14, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
