[edit] Route description
MD 90 splits off of US 50 roughly 4 miles before US 50 reaches U.S. 113 near Berlin. It then passes through Ocean Pines as a two-lane freeway before crossing the St. Martin's River. After crossing the river the route intersects St. Martin's Neck Road at the only traffic light along the route (aside from the one at the end). Then it crosses the Assawoman Bay on the Assawoman Bay Bridge, and ends at an intersection with Maryland Route 528 at 62nd street in Ocean City.
[edit] Safety
Due to the two-lane freeway nature of the road and the fact that most drivers on the road had already spent most of their time on the divided US 50 for a good distance before reaching MD 90, it is highly prone to head-on collisions. Despite attempts by the state to help make the road safer, including requiring headlight usage and placing rumble strips along the center line of the road, accidents still happen along it. One notable accident that happened along the route (on July 10, 2005) led to the death of Freda Wright-Sorce, wife of radio personality Don Geronimo of the Don and Mike show.

[edit] History
MD 90 first opened in the 1970s to provide an alternate gateway into the resort in addition to US 50. It serves as the northern access corridor into Ocean City, while US 50 serves as the southern access corridor.
