[edit] Early Career

Waghorn started his youth career playing for Manchester United School of Excellence,[1] then at the age of 8 he moved to his local team Sunderland where he progressed through the youth system at the Academy of Light to reach the Under-18 team. Waghorn scored the first hat-trick of his career on the 12 December against Norwich in the FA Youth Cup third round in the 6–1 win.[2] He scored 2 goals in a 4–2 win against rivals Newcastle on the 20 December at the Academy of Light, both of the goals being penalties.[3]

[edit] Sunderland

Waghorn made his club debut against Manchester United with the match finishing 4–0 to Manchester United, on the December 26, 2007, at the Stadium of Light.[4] The player, though usually a striker, was forced to convert to left midfield, however, his overall performance was generally accepted by the manager Roy Keane, despite the change in position. Roy Keane heaped praise on the young player saying that he will have a long and successful career, naming the qualities of Waghorn shortly after the match.[5]

His performance against Manchester United earned him another call up to the first team squad against Bolton Wanderers F.C.. He was an unused substitute.[6] He made his second appearance for Sunderland as a substitute in the 81st minute against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.[7] He made his second start for the club in an FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic on the 5 January and was replaced by Andrew Cole on the 57th minute. [8] Waghorn signed a 2-and-a-half-year deal at Sunderland in February. Roy Keane has said the deal was good for both Sunderland and the player. [9]
