Carlos Edwards (born 24 October 1978 in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) is a Trinidadian football player who plays as a midfielder for Sunderland. He went to the same school (St Anthony's College in Westmoorings [1]) as team-mate Kenwyne Jones.

[edit] Club career

Edwards started his career at Defence Force in his native Trinidad and Tobago. He was later signed by Wrexham for £250,000 in 2000, along with Dennis Lawrence and Hector Sam. After five years with Wrexham, making 165 appearances and winning one piece of silverware in the form of the Football League Trophy, Edwards joined Championship side Luton Town in 2005 on a Bosman transfer. At Luton, he became popular with the fans with his flair and ability, winning the Young Members Player of the Season award.[citation needed]

Edwards completed a £1.5 million move to Sunderland on 2 January 2007, signing on a three-and-a-half-year contract. It was believed that Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson made Sunderland manager Roy Keane aware of Edward's ability, and advised Keane that he would be a worhwhile signing. Edwards started his career at Sunderland with goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry City and Birmingham City. A goal against Southampton and a spectacular 80th-minute winner against Burnley confirmed Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League, after Derby failed to beat Crystal Palace. At Sunderland, Carlos plays alongside fellow Trinidad and Tobago internationals Dwight Yorke and Kenwyne Jones.

[edit] International career

Edwards is known to be a firm fan favourite within the Trinidad and Tobago national football team. His speed and trickery on the ball have become his hallmarks and he is noted as one of the most consistent players on the side.[citation needed]

In 2006, Edwards was called up to the Trinidad and Tobago national football team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In his first match against Sweden in the World Cup, he gained a Man of the Match award by shutting down higher level players such as Zlatan Ibrahimović of Internazionale. He also played in Trinidad's other two games, against England and Paraguay, receiving acclaim for his overall performances from many observers.[who?]
