Manuel P. Asensio is a hedge fund manager in New York best known for his work as an activist short-seller. From 1992-2003, Mr. Asensio served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive and Investment Officer of Asensio & Company, Inc. In addition to generating impressive returns, Mr. Asensio’s activist strategy benefited legislators, regulators, journalists, and investors, leading to important reforms within the securities industry. These reforms include positive changes in the State of Alaska’s Office of the Attorney General, new listing procedures at the American Stock and Options Exchange (“AMEX”), and amendments to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s (“FINRA”) regulations relating to the governance of research analysts’ conflicts of interest.
Mr. Asensio has worked in the securities industry for over twenty years. He earned a Bachelors of Science Economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University.
He is also the author of a book about his work titled Sold Short (ISBN 0-471-38338-4).
In 2000, the NASD fined and censured Mr. Asensio for numerous violations of securities regulations. [1]
