Malviya Nagar (Delhi)

Malviya Nagar is an affluent region of South Delhi, and is close to Saket and Hauz Khas.

Malviya Nagar was initially populated in the 1950s and 1960s by refugees from Pakistan, after the Partition of India. A large portion of the population were ethnic Punjabis and Sindhis.

Today, Malviya Nagar is bounded by Panchsheel Enclave on the north, Sheikh Sarai on the east, Saket in the south, and Sarvapriya Vihar on the west. Enclaves that are part of Malviya Nagar include Geetanjali Enclave, Bhavishya Nidhi Enclave, Khirki Extension and Sarvodaya Enclave.

Malviya Nagar is also home to the Delhi Police department's Police Training School.

Malviya Nagar has two major commercial shopping areas and markets and a specialty hospital[1]. There are several neighborhood parks that are popular jogging and running areas. A number of Mughal-era monuments are located in Malviya Nagar and are clustered close to the Corner Market.

Places like Chic Fish, Rimpy's, Swagath, Suribachi, Sagar Ratna and the Panchsheel Rendezvous are very well-known eateries. Fast food joints include Domino's, Ajit Restaurant, Cafe Coffee Day, Subway and Sri Ram Sweets.

The Chic Fish was rated as among the best restaurant's in North India by The Hindustan Times.

Malviya Nagar has two markets, The Corner Market and The Main Market (closed on Tuesdays). These markets cover the day to day and even some extravagant needs of the local residents. The Main Market has several stores, including those selling vegetables, fruits, clothes, appliances etc. Some upmarket brands like Adidas, Reebok and Liberty have also set up shop here.

The market even features several electronic showrooms such as the Samsung Digital Plaza, LG Lifestyle Shoppe and the Sony Exclusive Store. Jewellery stores like Ambica Jewels have also carved a niche in the area.

Malviya Nagar is bordered by two major New Delhi throughfares - Sri Aurobindo Marg, which is a primary route connecting Connaught Place and Central Delhi to Gurgaon, and the Outer Ring Road.

Several bus lines also serve the area, with fares ranging from Rs. 3.00 to Rs. 10.00:

  • Route 413: Mehrauli to Nizamuddin, via Khel Gaon and Kranti Marg.
  • Route 500: Saket to Shivaji Stadium.
  • Route 503: Malviya Nagar to Mori Gate in North Delhi, via Hauz Khas, Yusuf Sarai and AIIMS.
  • Route 520: Malviya Nagar to Connaught Place, also via Hauz Khas, Yusuf Sarai and AIIMS.

Autorickshaws and taxis are widely available. Walking to bordering neighborhoods - particularly Saket - is also possible.

The Delhi Metro Yellow line to Gurgaon is under construction and is expected to have one stop at Malviya Nagar by 2010[2].
