[edit] Mahopac is not a suburb

As the entry for suburb states, "Suburbs are commonly defined as residential areas on the outskirts of a city or large town." Mahopac is not on the outskirts of NYC and is thus not properly called a NYC suburb. It is also debatable whether its character is residential as opposed to rural.

As the exurb entry states, "The expression 'exurb' (for 'extra-urban') was coined in the 1950s, by Auguste Comte Spectorsky to describe the ring of prosperous rural communities beyond older suburbs that, due to availability via the new high-speed limited-access highways, were becoming commuter towns for an urban area." As a now-prosperous rural community well beyond the older northern suburbs of NYC in Westchester, Mahopac fits this definition well. Larchmont, Tuckahoe, and Scarsdale are examples of older northern NYC suburbs. Mahopac, and indeed just about all of Putnam, is so much farther north and still predominately rural such that it cannot properly be called a suburb. --Ana Nim 13:58, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Also note that the discussion of exurbs refers to upper Westchester as early exurbs of NYC. Certainly the areas north of those exurbs from which people commute to NYC can only be classified as exurbs themselves, at most. --Ana Nim 14:07, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Locations in Somers?

No support was provided for the claim that parts of Mahopac are in the Town of Somers. A review of the 2000 Census maps--see here: http://ftp2.census.gov/plmap/pl_trt/st36_NewYork/ and review the Putnam and Westchester entries--shows that the boundary for the Mahopac Census Designated Place is the county line, and the Somers map does not show a Mahopac Census Designated Place located there.--Ana Nim (talk) 18:02, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
