MacArthur is a Bay Area Rapid Transit station near MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland. The station's platforms are located in the center median of State Route 24 while the concourse mezzanine is located underneath the freeway's eastbound lanes. It is just north of the MacArthur Freeway/SR 24/I-980 interchange, one of the traffic segments of the MacArthur Maze. (All of which are named, in turn, after General Douglas MacArthur, including the BART station). The station's two island platforms and four main tracks basically serve as a cross-platform interchange, between the Pittsburg/Bay Point - Daly City Line, and both the Richmond - Daly City Line and the Richmond - Fremont Line. One island platform serves trains headed towards the 19th Street/Oakland station while the other platform serves trains bound for either Richmond or Pittsburg/Bay Point.

Passengers changing trains at this station should pay attention to the electronic train destination signs located on the platform. Occasionally, a train will board on the opposite side of the platform island. [Example: A train to Richmond may arrive on the side indicated as "to Pittsburg" on the station diagram]

At most times during the day, trains are timed to facilitate cross-platform transfers. Also, due to the single-track configuration of the southbound platform at 19th Street station, Fremont-bound trains (on the Richmond - Fremont Line) are held at the platform while the San Francisco train (on the Pittsburg/Bay Point - Daly City line) proceeds.
