I've been intentionally vague on when his conducting debut was, because some sources say it was at age seven, others at nine, and one says he was eight. I'm just using general sources (other encyclopaedias, music dictionaries and so on), so if anybody has a biog or something more reliable, we could probably get a more precise date from that. --Camembert
It says in a brochure from the New York Philharmonic that he received his first conducting lesson at age 7 and made his debut at age 8, leading a university orchestra. Smedley Hirkum
