Talk:List of people from Vermont

Why do we need to divide this list up into sections for each letter and why do we need a table of contents? This is currently a very short list and could be much more straightforward. --MatthewUND(talk) 21:33, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- Probably not as short as when the above comment was made, but breaking it up by job is probably better though real difficult at this point. That way people could at least easily screen out people that aren't that notabie in areas they are familiar with. Right now the list is being nearly ignored. Needs more eyeballs.Student7 14:36, 17 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Notability
We need to screen folks better on this list. A person notable at the Vermont level should be more noted than a governor (we've had lots of those), US Senator & US Congressman and Supreme Court Chief Justice (plenty of those since Vermont's founding). Their achievement must be superior to those. So Kunin and Dean can stay. Kunin was Ambassador. Dean - Democratic Party chair.
Barbour Lewis should be easy to dispose of. He became a congressman in another state. Too low for this list. I recommend deletion.
Why is Jan Backus on here? If she headed the EPA, that would certainly qualify her. But what is "administrator?" Is that high enough? Opinions please. Student7 01:41, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I suspect military rank should be LtGeneral or higher. Cabinet rank in US Government. Ambassador to major nation. So maybe Kunin shouldn't be on here.
The person should be either immediately recognized as someone an outsider should know (Like Calvin Coolidge or Sinclair Lewis) - or would want to know (like Snowflake Bentley).Student7 14:35, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I've changed my mind on the Civil War generals - maybe can accept regular Major Generals - McClelland started off as a Major General as did other notable leaders.Student7 23:05, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Why is Ben Affleck on this list? It says in the first few sentences on his article he is from California, in the exact opposite side of the country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Usingpond (talk • contribs) 06:43, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

- This list is arbitrary. First set up a criteria, second create bounderies by defining subject 3) try doinga New York Times search or SOMETHING. There need to be more SIGNIFICANT cultural notables, not Pop Culture musicians etc who have a short shelf life. Classical musicians are notable because they contribute to the CULTURE of a society, not entertainers.65.183.134.122 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 00:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

- A great idea! Go ahead and propose something! It tends to be different in different locales. Pop musicians would never make it in NYC for example. But a bare minimum standard is that there must be an article which is accepted as a sign of notability by the Wikipedia editors. Articles are usually not needed in Vermont towns except maybe Burlington. But all entries towns or city or state need some footnote from a reputable source a) defining notability (at the local level) and b) that the person actually lived or llves in Vermont. This is often missing from this list but needs back-adding.

- I regret that the list of notables at most local levels is indeed dominated by pop musicians and athletes both with a short shelf life. And there are zillions of both since there are so many teams and so many sports and kids with a lot of money to spend on mostly bad music. It seems silly to me too, but you can't fight 'em.

- And it is going to get a lot worse before someone straightens it out. More and more non-notables are getting articles despite barriers. We'll all be in here one day!
