Is this a list of TV series made in / by UK or a list of series shown on UK TV?

Anoymous says: Added a link for 'Smuggler', A UK tv series shown in NZ in the early 80's. Have not found any documentation or records on the net for this series. The series was set in Cornwall around 1750.

[edit] Order vs Classification

I reckon the lists should be amalgamated in alphabetical order and each entry annotated with the "classification" as per the current header. This format should also be extended to the other lists referenced (at least some of which are already in order but unclassified). In preparation, the current classifications are as follows:

  • Animated
  • Children's
  • Comedy/Satire
  • Drama/Action
  • Factual
  • Game Show
  • Music
  • Science Fiction
  • Situation Comedy
  • Soap Opera

These or slight variations are OK with me: any objections/additions? I will assume that combinations of these are acceptable where appropriate (which makes my intended scheme more flexible). --Phil 10:57, Feb 11, 2004 (UTC)

OK, I've modified the categories a bit for context. I've merely copied the existing categories so there is probably some adjustment needed, plus multiple categories where appropriate.

On that subject, I assume that it is helpful to distinguish "comedy" game shows from others, the major distiguishing feature being that the latter involve members of the public competing for money as opposed to the former involving comedians (however defined :-) competing for laughs? --Phil 12:50, Feb 11, 2004 (UTC)

I've done a bit of reclassification. It's not always easy to sum up a programme in a couple of words, but I've sought to distinguish Game Shows (in which members of the public play) from Panel Games (in which "celebrities" play). Also it seems that everything without a script gets thrown in the "reality" bucket these days, so I'm trying to distinguish different strands. As far as I'm aware, "reality" only started to be used as a genre term when 24-hour total-immersion gameshows like Survivor and Big Brother (UK) came along; previously shows like Airport were described as "docusoaps", and horrible though the term may be, I think it's useful to distinguish these from the gameshow type. Then there are shows like Faking It and Wife Swap, which don't really fit into either strand (they're not game shows, even though FI does have a climactic challenge, and they're not docusoaps because "characters" don't carry through from one episode to the next). Faking It I would characterise as a variety of makeover show (I've listed it as "Makeover/challenge"), I don't really know what to call Wife Swap. Bonalaw 12:30, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "The" Problem

How are we going to sort all the TV programmes starting with the word "The"? For example, should we list all the "The" entries in the T section ('The' begins with 'T' - duh), or perhaps put them into sections which are relevant to their second word (for example, 'The Day Today' would be in the 'D' section - 'Day' begins with 'D', totally ignoring the 'The'). It isn't a big problem, I was just pointing it out so the page can look more organized. If we go with the second approach, I suggest listing the entries as 'Day Today, The'. On a side note, the pun in "'The' Problem" was totally intended. King Wagga 10:43, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

Am I the only one to remember a British series (70's to 80's) called Hazell? It had Janis Ian's "Fly Too High" as its theme tune and Nicholas Ball as the eponymous lead.86.148.255.213 21:57, 20 October 2007 (UTC)Northerner
