I think it would be useful if there were a distinction between those who actually served as Field Marshals, those who were given the title on (or in) retirement, and those merely honoured with the title, like Hirohito(!) and the Nepalese royals.Grant65 (Talk) 00:43, Sep 30, 2004 (UTC)

Agreed.

Also, it appears that this rank has been unofficially abolished during peacetime, just as the practice has been discontinued of promoting the senior Royal Navy and RAF flag officers to Admiral of the Fleet and Marshal of the Royal Air Force, respectively. Ellsworth 00:36, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Consistency

We are listing some by name/peerage other just by knighthood name with such as I can see no obvious pattern. We need to do one or the other really.Alci12 16:33, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

I've changed it so the main name used is the name at the time of appointment, with any later ennoblement or promotion noted afterwards (using only the highest subsequent title in cases where people have been promoted more than once). I think that's the most logical way of doing it. Proteus (Talk) 11:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
