• U-83  Germany attacked and sunk by Q-ship HMS Farnborough  United Kingdom. Thirty five crew killed.

• SS Mendi  United Kingdom rammed and sunk by SS Darro off St Catherine's Point. A total of 646 passengers and crew were killed.

• RMS Laconia ( United Kingdom): Sunk near Fastnet by German submarine U-50

• HMS Paragon  United Kingdom sunk in battle with German destroyers.

• HMS Laforey  United Kingdom exploded and sank off Boulogne with the loss of 59 crew. Eighteen survivors rescued.

• Schooner George A Marsh'  United States sank during a storm on Lake Ontario. Twelve people killed, including seven children.

• FV Nelson  United Kingdom and FV Ethel & Millie  United Kingdom sunk by 'UC-41  Germany. Seven crew of Ethel & Millie taken prisoner.

• UC-41  Germany sunk after an internal explosion in Tay estuary. All 27 crew and 7 British POWs killed.
