This is a list of famous people who have died in prison (in alphabet order), not those who were executed as punishment of their crimes.
- Abu Abbas, (natural causes), 2004 - Militant
- Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Ulrike Meinhof, Holger Meins, and Jan Raspe, all members of the Red Army Faction; dates of death 1974 to 1977
- Steve Biko, 1977, South African anti-apartheid activist, bludgeoned to death by South African police
- Walter Breen, 1993 - American child molester
- Jeffrey Dahmer, (homicide), 1994 - American serial killer; beaten to death by a fellow inmate.
- Garry David, Australian, died from wounds caused by self-mutilation
- Byron De La Beckwith, (heart attack), 2001 - American assassin
- Anthony Van Egmond, 1838 - Dutch war veteran and an early settler in the Huron Tract.
- Yuri Galanskov, (death from an operation by a doctor with no surgical qualifications), 1972, Russian poet, historian, and human rights activist, imprisoned for his writings
- John Gotti, (throat cancer), 2002 - American mafia boss.
- John Geoghan, (homicide), 2003 - Catholic priest and child molester
- John Wayne Glover, Sydney Granny Murderer
- Ryan Gracie, 2007 - Brazilian mixed martial artist
- Emil Hácha, President of Czechoslovakia, later of the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia
- Rudolf Hess, (suicide), 1987 - Nazi.
- Myra Hindley, (lung cancer), 2002 - British serial killer.
- Ronald Kray, 1995 - British gangster, twin brother of Reginald Kray
- Morris Levy, (died before his prison sentence could be decided), 1990 - American music industry executive, who was tried and convicted on charges of extortion.
- Richard Loeb, American murderer
- Andrew Martinez, (suicide), 2006, nude activist.
- Slobodan Milošević, 2006, Serbian and Yugoslav president.
- Lee Harvey Oswald, charged with the murder of John F. Kennedy; killed by Jack Ruby.
- Jack Ruby, (cancer), murderer of Lee Harvey Oswald
- Bobby Sands, (hunger strike), 1981 - Irish republican. Died along with 9 other Republicans on hunger strike. See 1981 Irish Hunger Strike.
- Harold Shipman, (suicide), 2004 - British doctor, who killed many of his patients.
- Nikolai Vavilov, (death of malnutrition in prison), 1943 - prominent Russian botanist and geneticist who was imprisoned for his struggle against pseudoscience
- Patrick Waite, (natural causes), 1993 - British musician, bassist for Musical Youth - died of a hereditary heart condition while awaiting trial for drug charges stemming from his career committing juvenile crime.
- Raoul Wallenberg, (extrajudicial punishment in Soviet Lefortovo prison), 1947 or later - prominent humanitarian worker who saved tens of thousands of Jews from extermination by Nazi
- Fred West, (suicide), 1995 - Killed himself while awaiting trial for murder.
- Graham Young, (heart attack) 1990 - poisoner, died in Parkhurst prison. Heart attack official cause but there has been speculation that other prisoners may have been responsible.
