The following is a list of locations in the video game franchise Silent Hill.
[edit] Silent Hill
Silent Hill is a small town located somewhere in New England; the outskirts of the town are heavily forested, and the town itself sits on the shores of the large Toluca Lake. The town's residents primarily work in the community (as opposed to commuting to the surrounding towns), which draws most of its income from the tourist industry. The majority of the town's businesses are locally owned mom and pop stores, with no apparent influence of chain stores or franchises beyond a burger joint called "Happy Burger".
Prior to the 1600s, the town of Silent Hill was the home of members of an unnamed Native American tribe that used the land for sacred rituals. At the end of the century, settlers arrived and founded the town; shortly thereafter, they began to rapidly die off. The deaths were attributed to an epidemic, and Brookhaven Hospital was built to treat those affected. Eventually the settlers fled the town, leaving it abandoned for nearly a century, until it was resettled as a penal colony in the early 1800s. Twenty years later, another epidemic broke out, and Brookhaven Hospital was rebuilt and reopened. In the 1840s, the prison was closed, and the town once more abandoned; in the 1850s, coal was discovered there by another wave of settlers, and it became a boom town. During the American Civil War, the town served as a prisoner of war camp; after the end of the war, the prison used to house prisoners was converted into a state penitentary, and shortly thereafter, Silent Hill became a resort town. Around roughly the same period, a group of religious zealots founded a series of small doomsday cults based upon the escathology of the unnamed Native American tribe which occupied the land before settlers arrived. Collectively referring to themselves as "The Order," the cults-- each of whom worshipped a different sub-deity-- practiced human sacrifice and necromancy in an ongoing effort to resurrect "The God," an ancient deity which they believed would usher in an age of paradise by killing all humans. In order to fund their efforts, The Order dealt a psychedelic drug called White Claudia, manufactured from a plant indigenous to the town. The drug trade served to increase tourism to the town from the residents of surrounding areas, who travelled there to obtain White Claudia. The drug trade was crippled in the early 1980s, in the midst of a war between The Order and local authorities, during which members of the order murdered several police officers.
[edit] Locations within Silent Hill
Paleville - Identified in the first Silent Hill game as being the northern half of the town, the counterpart to South Vale. It contains Old Silent Hill, Central Silent Hill, and the Resort Area.
Old Silent Hill - A residential area of town populated by homes of 1940s-1950s architecture. In spite of the name, it is not the oldest part of Silent Hill; that distinction belongs to South Vale, location of the two oldest structures in Silent Hill, the prison and Brookhaven Hospital.
- Cafe 5to2 - A small diner located on the North side of town. Harry woke up here, and met Cybil, in the beginning of Silent Hill.
- Midwich Elementary School - An elementary school located on the south-west side of town. Both Lisa Garland and Alessa Gillespie were students there. This location was also seen in Silent Hill (film).
- Balkan Church - A legitimate church, possibly Eastern Orthodox, in Old Silent Hill. Harry first encounters Dahlia there. The church holds enough historical significance for Henry Townshend to have a photograph of the church in his bedroom.
- Cut Rite Chain Saws - A small shop near Blooch St.
- Bridge Control Room - A two floor building located where the bridge from Old Silent Hill to Central Silent Hill could be raised and lowered.
Central Silent Hill - Part of Silent Hill's business district, Central Silent Hill is the home to most of the town's public service buildings, such as the police station, theatre, emergency hospital, and post office.
- Police - The headquarters of the Silent Hill police force and their (ineffective) war on Order-related drug trafficking.
- Silent Hill Post Office - A normal post office. In Silent Hill, Harry fought a gigantic moth creature here.
- Silent Hill Town Center - A shopping mall located in the northwestern section of Central Silent Hill. Harry fights a gigantic caterpillar there.
- Alchemilla Hospital - A hospital located in Central Silent Hill. Unlike Brookhaven Hospital in South Vale, which treats terminal patients and the mentally ill, Alchemilla is primarily used for its emergency room; it is where Alessa was taken after being burned in the fire prior to the events of the original Silent Hill. The hospital also served as the production facility for White Claudia, a process overseen by the hospital's director, Michael Kaufman, a member of The Order. Alessa was kept in the hospital's basement for several years in a semi-comatose state, watched over by Kaufman's lover/drug slave, Nurse Lisa Garland.
- Antique Green Lion: An antique store owned and operated by Dahlia Gillespie. It served as the headquarters for The Order. The basement contains an altar used for unspecificed rituals.
- Cedar Grove Sanitarium - A mental hospital on the edge of Silent Hill. Helen Grady was institutionalized there in the early 1960s.
- Greenfield Apartments - A small set of apartments next to the graveyard by Artaud Theater.
- Public Records Office - A public records office located near the Theater. Reports on the Gillespie home fire were found in here by Travis.
- Andy's Books - A bookshop opposite Alchemilla Hospital.
- Artaud Theater - A playhouse in Central Silent Hill. While watching a rehearsal of The Tempest there, Alessa was frightened by the actor playing Caliban. She disliked the actor playing Prospero and gave him a severe nosebleed with her powers.
- Riverside Motel - A fairly sizeable motel located south of Alchemilla Hospital. Richard Grady committed suicide here during a stay with his son Travis.
Silent Hill (resort area) - The tourist destination on the north side of Toluca Lake.
- The Lighthouse - The lighthouse on Toluca Lake, one of the town’s oldest structures. Henry Townshend had a photograph of the Lighthouse in his bedroom.
- Lakeside Amusement Park - A theme park overlooking the lake. In Silent Hill 3, it is revealed that it is somehow connected with the church, and contains a passage to it behind the merry-go-round.
- Annie's Bar - A bar where Kaufmann left behind a trail of clues that Harry followed.
- Indian Runner - A general store owned by a member of the local drug syndicate who knew Kaufmann.
- Norman's Motel - A motel on the north shore of Toluca Lake. Kaufman lived there.
- Lakeview Hotel : A majestic hotel on the shores of Toluca Lake. Sometime prior to the events of Silent Hill 2, it was burned beyond repair; the remants of the structure are still standing.
- Church: An unnamed church used by The Order; it seems to have been built sometime between the events of Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 3. It is largely modeled after a traditional Catholic Church, with stained glass windows, confessionals, religious icons, and renaissance-style paintings.
South Vale - The Southern portion of Silent Hill, South Vale contains a mixture of residential and commercial areas; it is the primary focus of the town's Tourist Industry, containing most of the town's historical sites and landmarks.
- Observation Deck and Hiking Trail - A scenic overlook along County Road 73; it sits on Toluca Lake and affords a view of the majority of South Vale. The deck is part of a hiking trail that can be used to enter Silent Hill on foot. The trail passes through a tiny, unnamed cemetery, and Silent Hill Ranch.
- Woodside Apartments and Blue Creek Apartments - Two small indoor apartment complexes with architecture similar to that found in New York City apartment buildings. They are the only two such complexes in Silent Hill; all other residents are found to live in either homes or Norman's Motel.
- The Baldwin Mansion - A large, stately mansion located near the Blue Creek Apartments. It is revealed in Silent Hill 2 that a man named Ernest Baldwin lived there, with his daughter who accidentally died, and possibly his wife (it is not stated if he lived with his wife or not). The mansion can only be visited when playing Maria's side of the story.
- Rosewater Park - A park on the south shore of Toluca Lake. It contains several memorials, including one to the people who disappeared aboard "The Little Baroness," a steamboat that mysteriously vanished in 1918 whithout a trace, and another to a woman who was murdered by witch hunters.
- Heaven’s Night - A strip club.
- Brookhaven Hospital - A hospital and mental institution in South Vale. It was founded in the 1860s as a Civil War field hospital and in response to a mysterious disease which plagued the town. In the story from Silent Hill 2, Mary checked in here before leaving with James on their honeymoon. She would later check in at St. Jerome’s Hospital in Ashfield were she would meet Laura. This hospital also contained a hidden underground room which was referenced in document and possibly served a similar function to the 'Alchemilla Hospital' rooms. It was also seen in Silent Hill (film).
- Silent Hill Historical Society - A historical museum on the edge of South Vale. It appears to be built on the ruins of Toluca Prison. It contains a portrait of Pyramid Head.
- Toluca Prison - A defunct prison originally used to house Civil War POWs. Its exact location is not stated in the games, however it appears to be located beneath the Historical Society building. Possibly the building was built over the site of the unused prison. However this may just be caused by James' delusions though it is still highly likely based on where James exits the Labyrinth that connects to it.
- Jack's Inn - A small motel located just South of Rosewater park. Douglas and Heather rested in a room here before they split up. James found a save point on a car, and the dog key here, but nothing else.
- Neelys Bar - A Bar located on the corner of Neely St. and Sanders St., James could enter it to look at a map and was taunted by daubed messages. It was also seen in Silent Hill (film).
- Pete's Bowl-O-Rama - A bowling alley where James saw Eddie eating pizza, and talking to Laura. It was also seen in Silent Hill (film).
- Texxon Gas - A gas station where a weapon as well as other items could be found. Eddie worked here at one time but was ridiculed, and quit.
- Gonzale's Mexican Restaurant - A Mexican restaurant.
- Café Texan - A Western style café.
- Café Mist - A café. It was also seen in Silent Hill (film).
Toluca Lake – The lake was surrounded by forests, upon which the town of Silent Hill was founded. Henry Townshend had a photograph of Toluca Lake in his bedroom and he got to see it when he visited the Silent Hill woods. James crossed it to get to the Lakeview Hotel. In the film, Cybil mentioned that there was a watchtower with a radio on the far side of the lake.
- Wish House (A.K.A. Hope House) - A secluded, Order-run orphanage in the woods outside of Silent Hill. Walter Sullivan lived here.
- Sheppard's Orphanage - The orphanage that Ben, Moon, Karen and Alessa lived as children (probably Order-run).
- The Water Prison (A.K.A. Cylinder Prison, A.K.A. Panopticon) - A jail used by The Order to punish and brainwash the children living in the Wish House. While a stay there was used as a form of punishment, most of the children's stays were scheduled. It was likely to be situated within a mile or two of Wish House.
[edit] Locations outside Silent Hill
Heather's town – The unnamed town to which Harry and Heather moved in the witness protection program after being attacked in Portland. It is at least a few hours' drive from Silent Hill, possibly farther; Douglas states that it would be too far to walk. Harry and Heather live here for twelve years prior to the events in Silent Hill 3.
- Central Square Shopping Center – A sleek, modern shopping center.
- Hazel Street Station – A subway station underneath the Central Square Shopping Center.
- Hilltop Center – An office building half a block down the street from Daisy Villa Apartments.
- Daisy Villa Apartments – Harry and Heather’s home on Bergen Street.
Ashfield – A busy town half a day’s drive from Silent Hill.
- South Ashfield Heights Apartments – An apartment building. It was a home to Henry Townshend, Eileen Galvin, Richard Braintree and the superintendent, Frank Sunderland (who was the father of James Sunderland, the main protagonist of Silent Hill 2). It was also the birthplace of Walter Sullivan. Nurse Rachel also lived here.
- South Ashfield Station – A subway station which appears to connect (either directly or indirectly) to Silent Hill.
- Ashfield Hotel - A large hotel directly across from South Ashfield Apartments. This was apparently where Eric Walsh lived.
- Watch and Clock Store - A small, one room watch shop owned by Sullivan's ninth victim, William Gregory. Walter apparently gave the man a strange watch to be fixed when he was a teen.
- Garland Pet Shop - A small shop, owned by Sullivan's fourth victim, Steve Garland. Walter accidentally killed a cat there as a child, and when he killed the man there he also massacred all the pets in the shop with a sub-machine gun. It is also possible that Steve Garland is related to Lisa Garland.
- Albert's Sports - A small shop owned by Sullivan's fifth victim, Rick Albert. It was a fairly successful sports shop.
- St. Jerome’s Hospital – A hospital in Ashfield. Eileen Galvin was treated there after being brutally attacked by Walter Sullivan. Mary and Laura were also patients there, and were taken care of by a nurse named Rachel.
Brahms (alternately spelled Brahams in Silent Hill (film)) – A town neighboring Silent Hill. Cybil Bennett lived and worked there. This location was featured in Silent Hill (film), but only referred to in the games.
Pleasant River - A town that seems to be located northeast of Silent Hill. Walter Sullivan studied at the University of Pleasant River along with Bobby Randolph, Sein Martin and Jasper Gein from Silent Hill 4. It was not featured in the games.
Portland – The town in which Harry Mason lived until somewhere around five years after the events in the original Silent Hill. Harry and Heather lived here until they were found and attacked by a cult member. They then moved to a nameless town which served as the setting for the first half of Silent Hill 3.
Shepherd's Glen- The hometown of Silent Hill 5's protagonist Alex Shepherd and probably where Silent Hill 5's story will begin.
