List of Michigan County-Designated Highways

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Below is a list of many County-Designated Highways in Michigan. Unlike State Highways (M-nn), there is a zone system to the numbering of these highways. Highways in italics are decommissioned.

The basic plan provides for dividing the state into eight zones, lettered from A to H. These zones are determined by major state and federal trunklines which form dividers.
Within each zone, two-digit numbers will designate continuous routes, although each may cross several counties. In some cases, the route number may extend through one or more zones although the letter designation may change.
The numbering system will employ even numbers for East-West roads and odd numbers for North-South routes. Lower numbers, such as 01 and 02, etc., will start at the East or South boundaries and progressively increase to the 90 and 91 levels toward the West and North within each zone.
Thus, a traveler seeking to find A-28 could quicky determine that his destination is in the Southwestern Michigan area and that his route is an East-West road in the central part of that zone.[1]

[edit] Zone system

[edit] Lower Peninsula

The Lower Peninsula is divided into 6 zones, A-F:

  • The "A" Zone is bordered by I-96 on the north and US 127 on the east.
  • The "B" Zone is bordered by I-96 on the south, US 10 on the north and US 127 on the east.
  • The "C" Zone is bordered by US 10 on the south and both I-75 and US 127 on the east. Since C-64 and C-66 keep their designations across I-75, it is likely that M-27 forms part of the boundary as well.
  • The "D" Zone is bordered by US 127 on the west and I-96 on the north.
  • The "E" Zone is bordered by US 127 on the west, I-96 on the south and US 10 on the north. As of 2007, no routes have been designated in the E Zone.
  • The "F" Zone is bordered by both I-75 and US 127 on the west and US 10 on the south. Since C-64 and C-66 keep their designations across I-75, it is likely that M-27 forms part of the boundary as well.

[edit] Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula is divided into the "G" and "H" zones. The dividing line between the two zones is US 41, with Zone G lying west of US 41 and Zone H lying east of it.

[edit] Highways in A Zone

[edit] A-2

County Designated Highway A-2 or A-2 is located in the southwestern part of the Lower Peninsula and runs along near the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It was originally part of US-31 before the I-196/US-31 freeway was built, and is one of only 4 county designated highways in the state that was a former federal or state highway. It was the first county designated highway in the Lower Peninsula.[2]

[1]

[edit] A-37

Begins at M-222 in Allegan, running northerly to a terminus at I-196 in Hudsonville.

[edit] A-42

County Highway A-42 or A-42 is a part of the state coordinated, County-Designated Highway System. It runs for 16.4 miles (26.4 km) in Allegan County, Michigan. The original segments of the highway were designated in 1982.[3] The western terminus of A-42 is at M-40 just north of Dunningville. Its eastern terminus is at a junction of US 131 and M-179 near Bradley.

A-42 begins at an intersection with M-40 north of Dunningville. It follows 128th Avenue eastward to 13th Street. A-42 follows 13th Street northward for .75 miles (1.21 km) to a junction with 129th Avenue. From there, it turns eastward again along 129th Avenue to the US 131/M-179 interchange.

A-42 originally continued from US 131 another 6.146 miles (9.891 km) to M-43 west of Hastings.[4] This routing followed Metz, Bowen's Mill and Gun Lake roads. This portion of A-42 was transferred to the state as M-179 on 1999-10-31 as a part of the Governor John Engler's Rationalization plan. This portion was considered for a western extension of M-79, but the Michigan Department of Transportation ultimately decided to use a new designation instead.[3]

The first portion of A-42 designated was between A-37 south of Monterey and M-43 in Hastings in 1982. This routing would be extended westerly in 1993-4 to the current terminus at M-40.

[edit] A-45

County Designated Highway A-45 or A-45 makes its run from Kalamazoo County to Kent County, and travels through the communities of Cooper Center, Plainwell, Martin, Shelbyville, Bradley, Wayland, Moline, Cutlerville, and Michigan. The road was originally part of US-131 before its freeway was constructed.

Its common name is Division Ave in Kent County although only the southern portion of that road is designated as A-45. The northern end of the road is at M-11. Although M-6 intersects the road it does not have an interchange. Its southern end ends at the BUS 131 in Kalamazoo.

County Highway C-58 is a moderately-traveled 23-mile long tourist highway in the U.S. state of Michigan.

The eastern terminus is at exit 301 off I-75 just east of Wolverine in southwest Cheboygan County. The western terminus is uncertain. Signage on Michigan's county-designated highways is typically haphazard and there is no precise indication as to where the designation ends. However, the signage disappears west of the intersection with C-81 just east of Petoskey.

The highway is also known as Mitchell Road in Emmet County and as Wolverine Road in Cheboygan County, except in the village of Wolverine, where it is known as Main Street. Some maps also label it as Silver Lake Road west of Wolverine, which is a continuation of the road after C-58 makes two 90-degree turns to follow a parallel route just about a half-mile to the north. There are several other sharp turns along the route.

The road started out as a portion of M-10 in 1926, becoming US-23 in 1928, and retaining the US-23 designation until the beginning of 1937 when a new US 23 alignment was completed along the Lake Huron shoreline from Oscoda to near the Alcona County/Alpena County line. It then became M-171, and kept that designation until 1960 when the road was returned to local control. The road received its F-41 designation in 1971.

[edit] H-33

Michigan County Highway H-33 or H-33 was originally parts of two Michigan state highways from the 1930s. From US-2 to present day H-44, it was originally M-135, and M-98 from H-44 near Helmer to M-28.

[edit] H-40

Michigan County Highway H-40 or H-40 is one of the County Designated Highways that was, in this case, part of a U.S. Route and a Michigan State highway. In the 1930s, H-40 was originally part of M-48 from Rudyard to Garnet, where M-48 turned north. The rest of H-40 to about 4 miles west of Engadine was originally part of US-2.

[edit] H-42

The eastern terminus is at H-37 in Muskallonge Lake State Park, Deer Park, Luce County, Michigan. H-58 provides the main access to the park and as such is undergoing a revitalization effort to complete paving of the road surface by 2010.

[edit] H-60

Unsigned, from H-58 east of Munising to M-77 south of Grand Marais.

[edit] H-63

County-Designated Highway H-63 runs generally parallel to and within a few miles of I-75 from the northern limits of St. Ignace (near Castle Rock) to Sault Ste. Marie. This segment of highway is also a relic of former U.S. Highway 2 between those cities. As I-75 was constructed between St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie, the US 2 designation was transferred to the freeway with the former route being turned back to local control. In the early 1970s, the former route of US 2 along Mackinac Trail was designated as H-63.

H-63 is known as Mackinac Trail for its entire length.
