It is beleived that the origin of the play "Les chaises" is from a visit of Ionesco to Haifa, Israel in the late 40's. He met in Haifa relatives that lived in an immigrant neighbourhood, in a small apartment where they kept several chaires empty, and ready for their guests. This couple provided the background to the charachters of the "Old Man" and "Old Woman" in the play. Can anybody familiar with Ionesco's family and his probable visit to Israel in the late 40's, confirm this info. ?? Thank you.
