Leicester Airport (ICAO: EGBG) is a small aerodrome in Stoughton, Leicestershire, 4 nautical miles (7.4 km) east southeast of Leicester. It was previously known as Stoughton Aerodrome. It was constructed in 1942 and was known as RAF Leicester East.

Leicester Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P720) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Leicestershire Aero Club Limited).[1]

[edit] Proposed creation of an Eco-town

Leicester Mercury recently reported that plans were set forward to destroy the current airport and build a new eco-town. Since Leicester already has a larger airport, East Midlands Airport (which is shared between Leicester, Nottingham and Derby), this airport has often only been used for a flying club. If the proposer offers a large enough sum, only then would this airport be destroyed.[2] On 3 April, 2008, it was announced [3] that the Pennbury proposal was one of fifteen sites shortlisted for the next phase of public consultations.
