Is this party right wing or left? I see two answers on this page.

i dont see two answers. labour party is left-wing, it's not a fact in dispute.

Israel uses the American/Latin spelling of labor. "Labour" should be a redirect to "Labor," but I don't know how to do that. Sorry.

Not on their own Web site, they don't. Where's your evidence? (Did you click on the "Official website" at the bottom of the page...?)

It's on the sign above the entrance to party headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Since the spelling on their Web site is more recent, that should probably be what guides us in this decision.

Israeli's I know use British spelling - given that Israel was part of the British mandate of Palestine this makes sense. The use of US spelling is probably only due to the large numbers of American immigrants to Israel.

You are INCORRECT. Listen, I understand most Wiki users hate the U.S., but these spelling wars are ridiculous. Go to official Israeli Web sites. They use American spelling ("Ministry of Defense," etc.). That means this page should be written using American spelling. That's policy!

No that is NOT incorrect and it is not a spelling war. The use of US spelling only began with the large scale American immigration to Israel. Prior to 1948 Israel was a British mandate for some thirty years. Therefore British spelling was used and is the correct one to employ. To use American spelling is historically and culturally inappropriate since it has only been used by American colonists. Also why did you change 'British Labour' to 'British labor'? The British labour party has never used the -or spelling.

Listen, Americans aren't a disease (though you may think so). The fact that many Americans have immigrated to Israel may be part of why Israel favors American spelling, but that's irrelevant: ISRAEL NOW FAVORS AMERICAN SPELLING (though some Israelis still use British spelling, of course, as do some Americans, Chinese, and lots of others who otherwise generally use American/spelling reform spellings). The U.S., like Israel, ALSO used British spelling originally. Guess why? Because the U.S. was a British colony. Would you argue on those grounds that Americans all spell English incorrectly? You might, but that would be absurd. Your "[t]herefore" is simply incorrect, and you are manifesting cultural bias (the view that earlier is better; your IP number -- by the way, why don't you log in? -- indicates you are from Europe, where the "earlier is better" view is common; that doesn't mean it's correct). The way things are NOW is what matters. That is Wiki policy. (About "British Labor" -- my careless mistake; sorry.) Wiki policy is NOT that that which is "historically appropriate" is what matters, perhaps in part because "historically appropriate" is a sloppy notion. Either way: Shakespeare originally used -- most of the time: he didn't care too much about spelling -- the Latin spelling of "-or" words until the Norman upper class compelled him to spell them "-our" (same thing with his spelling of "center"). Should we start changing all British -our spellings to -or spellings? No, because the "-our" spellings forced (partly) by the Norman upper class are now part of England's linguistic history. Israel's having been influenced by the U.S. is now part of their history. Your country was a superpower for a long time and influenced other countries. Now the U.S. is a superpower and is influencing other countries. Next it will be some other superpower that will influence other countries. Deal with it.

Please assume good faith and be civil, all of you. Now, Ha-Avoda's website does, indeed, use "Labor". Whether Israelis in general use "Labor" or "Labour", the party itself obviously prefers the American spelling. I'm new to editing Wikipedia so I don't want to make any changes without running these thoughts by other people first. Two names are given for the youth organization in the sentence: "The youth organisation is the Mishmeret Tse’irah shel Mifleget HaAwoda (Hebrew: משמר נוער בתוך מפלגת העבודה‎)." The Hebrew reads "Mishmar Noar Betoch Mifleget haAvoda." On the hebrew wikipedia page for the Israeli Labor party, there is an external link that takes one to the youth movement's page (www.labor.org.il/mishmeret). That page seems to confirm the English name in the sentence (though it includes a "ha" in front of "Tse'irah"). I would assume then that the hebrew needs to be changed to: משמרת הצעירה של מפלגת העבודה. Personally, I would also recommend changing the spelling in the English transliteration to be "Mishmeret HaTze'irah shel Mifleget HaAvoda" so that it is more consistent with other transliterations on the page. On a related note, the external link to the party's website does not seem to be working for me (neither in Safari 3 nor Firefox 2). However, www.labor.org.il (which hosts the youth movement's page) does seem to work. Has the Labor party moved their website to a new URL? -AvielD (talk) 01:48, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
