This is what is done in Paris (France rather than the French Republic), Berlin (Germany, not the Federal Republic of Germany), Split (Croatia, rather than the Republic of Croatia), Athens (Greece, rather than the Hellenic Republic), London (United Kingdom, not United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, Oakland, Seattle, and San Diego (United States, not United States of America), and so forth.
