Kure-nai (?) is a Japanese light novel series by Kentarou Katayama, with illustrations by Yamato Yamamoto. A manga adaptation started serialization in the first issue of Jump Square magazine. An anime adaptation by Brain's Base started airing in Japan on April 3, 2008.

Sixteen-year-old Shinkurō Kurenai, a specialist in settling squabbles between people, is one day approached by the daughter of a powerful plutocratic family asking him to be her bodyguard.

Shinkurō Kurenai (紅真九郎 Kurenai Shinkurō?)
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
The main protagonist of the series. Despite his looks he is a capable and strong worker who works for Benika doing many types of jobs including being the bodyguard of Murasaki. He is trained in the martial arts as well as being physically strong and will take any job for Benika to whom he looks up.
Murasaki Kuhōin (九鳳院紫 Kuhōin Murasaki?)
Voiced by: Aoi Yūki
She is the one being protected by Shinkuro. At first very stubborn and snobbish she soon lightens up and trusts Shinkuro. She lives with him for protection against her family that has a rule of keeping her in the Inner Sanctuary of their home at all times and never experiencing the outside world until Benika took her.
Benika Jūzawa (柔沢紅香 Jūzawa Benika?)
Voiced by: Sawa Ishige
She is Shinkuro's employer for which he would do anything for out of gratitude for her help when he was young and because he respects her completely. She a calm and collected person who goes with her intuition. On behalf of Murasaki's mother last wish she took Murasaki out of the Inner Sanctuary and placed her in the care of Shinkuro whom she believes is similar to her.
Yayoi Inuzuka (犬塚弥生 Inuzuka Yayoi?)
Voiced by: Aiko Ōkubo
She works for Benika as one of her subordinates and has a tendency to overstep her bounds with complaints about Shinkuro. She believes that an important job like protecting Murasaki would better be left in more capable and experienced hands.
Ginko Murakami (村上銀子 Murakami Ginko?)
Voiced by: Nozomi Masu
She is a friend of Shinkuro's who also looks up information for him on the Internet to help. She has been his friend for a long time and also seems to have a slight crush on him as well as worry about him when he does jobs for Benika.
Yūno Hōzuki (崩月夕乃 Hōzuki Yūno?)
Voiced by: Ryoko Shintani
A girl who Shinkuro lived with when he was young and also his sparring partner. She comes from a family that used to be assassins but still practice the martial arts. Her soft demeanor hides the fact she is a strong fighter. She also seems to have a crush on Shinkuro and likes to spend time with him.
Tamaki Mutō (武藤環 Mutō Tamaki?)
Voiced by: Asami Sanada
She is a university student who lives in the same building as Shinkuro. She can be described as a very flirtatious person but especially to Shinkuro. She says she is very knowledgeable in the ways of love but doesn't include her own experiences as she has a hard time keeping a boyfriend.
Yamie (闇絵 Yamie?)
Voiced by: Haruka Kimura
She is yet another tenant of the building Shinkuro lives in. She always wears black and calls herself a very sinful woman. She likes cats and usually keeps to herself except when it comes to Shinkuro and Tamaki. Her attitude can be considered sarcastic most times.
Renjō Kuhōin (九鳳院蓮丈 Kuhōin Renjō?)
Voiced by: Takaya Kuroda
He is Murasaki's father who according to custom had to marry a woman named Kazuko. During her stay she abused Murasaki's real mother named Souju while taking the role of mother to herself to which she was not accustomed. Renjo in the meantime did nothing even when Souju, the woman he really loved, committed suicide.

An anime adaption started broadcast in Japan on April 3, 2008. It is written and directed by Kō Matsuo. The anime version is different from the manga in that the anime takes a more dramatic approach with a slice of life feel.

After approaching Benika to request more challenging jobs so he can earn more money, Shinkurō is assigned as a bodyguard to Murasaki. The next day, Shinkurō goes to school, leaving Murasaki alone in his apartment. When he returns, she is gone, and he begins frantically searching the neighborhood. The empathy Shinkurō and Murasaki share when they are reunited is the beginning of a bond between the two. 
02 "With the a Drain and a Stream"

While Shinkurō is at school, Murasaki meets the other inhabitants of the apartment building. In the evening, Shinkurō takes Murasaki to the public bathhouse, and then buys her a new futon. After Murasaki is asleep, Shinkurō goes out on another assignment as a negotiator, and finds himself in a violent confrontation with some thugs who are threatening the owner of a local restaurant showing there is more to Shinkuro than meets the eye. 
03 "Face of an Imposter"

Murasaki appears at Shinkuro's school and wanders around investigating life with the students and its culture and meets his long time friend Yūno Hōzuki and didn't like or trust her since she recognized Murasaki's last name. When later that night Shinkuro goes to another job for Benika Marasaki is hurt which caused Shinkuro to become brutal to the Yakuza that caused it. 
04 "Clever One"

After the incident at the yakuza's office, Yayoi demands to know why Shinkurō is given the job of protecting Murasaki. Shinkurō's background comes to light as well as the reason why Benika helped Murasaki escape. It also shows why he has a lot of respect for Benika. 
05 "Wish"

Murasaki and Shinkurō go to the Hōzuki household for Shinkurō to train with Yūno Hōzuki. Murasaki interacts with Yūno's little sister. In this episode you also find out there is more to the Hozuki house as well as Yuno who is shown to be a very competent martial artist.

All 4 apartment tenants are practicing for a musical which will be held during a community festival. Yūno is recruited but it turns out that she's tone deaf and she has Shinkurō practice with her. Yamie gets Yayoi to help her with her singing as well.

Murasaki sneaks out of the apartment complex to join Tamaki at college. After being dumped by her boyfriend, Tamaki shares her insight on women with Murasaki while having juice at a family restaraunt. This new information creates strong opinions in Murasaki about Yūno. A Kuhoin insider spots Murasaki at the restaraunt, divulging the information to the head of the Kuhoin's about Murasaki's whereabouts and Benika's involvement. More light is shed on the mystery of Murasaki's mother and her death. 
08 "Self Preservation and Cowardice"

While the Kuhoin's make plans to deal with the situation with Murasaki since she had been discovered Shinkuro along with the other tenants of the apartment building bring Murasaki out to visit a local temple. Murasaki tells Shinkuro how much she likes being with him and hopes it stays that way. The next day his friend Murakami tells him some disturbing information in relation to Murasaki and the Kuhoins and when he goes back to check on her he is attacked but is helped by Yayoi. 
09 "With You and Me"

Hidden away at a hotel, Benika tells Shinkuro some shocking reasons behind what he learned from Murakami about Murasaki. At the risk of being discovered by the Kuhoins, Murasaki and Shinkuro get consent from Benika to return to the apartment building for the night to bid farewell to Tamaki and Yamie before departing from the country. Unfortunately, the Kuhoins make another attack to get Murasaki easily overpowering both Yayoi and Shinkuro. To prevent Shinkuro from being killed, Murasaki is forced to return back with the Kuhoins. With all this going on, Benika breaks into the Kuhoin mansion to meet with Renjo and betting him that Shinkuro will be able to protect Murasaki. 
10 "Accustomed Fear"
"Nare no Kyoufu" (慣れの恐怖)

With Murasaki's return to the Kuhoin mansion, Shinkuro is irresolute while in the company of Tamaki and Yamie. He decides to go grocery shopping and encounters Yayoi. After the two spar, Yayoi shares her first job experience with Shinkuro telling him that he should be grateful that no harm was done to Murasaki and should forget everything and focus on to his next job. Benika visits Shinkuro informing him of his next job that requires him to move out of his apartment which he later on tells Tamaki and Yamie. Tamaki and Yamie make Shinkuro realize all his great memories of Murasaki which makes him insist permission from Benika to infiltrate the Kuhoin mansion.
