KUQI is a full-power broadcast television station in the Corpus Christi, Texas market. It airs over UHF channel 38. It is the Fox affiliate for the area, replacing the affiliation previously held by low-power station K47DF. The station began operating on January 15, 2008 as an independent station; it assumed the Fox affiliation February 4, 2008, the day after Super Bowl XLII.

KUQI inherited the current season of American Idol just before the start of semifinals, in which viewers get involved in deciding the fate of the contest. KUQI also aired the NFL Pro Bowl and the NASCAR Daytona 500, shortly after inheriting the affiliation.

KUQI does not have a news department, but it simulcasts the 9 o'clock news from KRIV in Houston.

[edit] Ownership

KUQI is owned by by Deidre Gillis, Lori Hoffmann and Vanisha Mallory of High Maintenance Broadcasting.

[edit] Transmission

Because KUQI is a high-power television station, its signal covers the Corpus Christi, Texas metropolitan area, as well as outlying towns as far as Raymondville and George West. The coverage area is far greater than that of K47DF. However, reception of KUQI in nearby towns, such as Kingsville and Bishop, was proven difficult the first few weeks on the air. The reason for this lack of signal is currently unknown and it has been resloved; as it is a new station, technical problems have been identified and the station's owners will address them accordingly.

In addition, most local cable companies have included KUQI in their cable line-up.

[edit] Digital television

Because it was granted an original construction permit after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 21, 1997 [1], the station did not receive a companion channel for a digital television station. Instead, on or before February 17, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, KUQI will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its digital signal (called a "flash-cut").
