[edit] Synopsis
The song, named after Jack Black's fictional hometown of Kickapoo, Missouri (while Kickapoo is an actual township in Missouri, in reality Black is from Hermosa Beach, California) tells the story of a young Black running away from home, and a very strict religious Christian father (again, fictional, as Jack Black was born and raised Jewish) to become a rock star. Meat Loaf appears in the movie and song as Black's father, and Ronnie James Dio appears as himself, after Black prays to a poster of him on the wall of his bedroom door. Originally, the role of Dio was going to be taken by Ozzy Osbourne.[1]
[edit] Live
In live performances of "Kickapoo," bandmate Kyle Gass performs Meat Loaf's lines while Jack Black sings the rest, including the words of Dio, as if he is quoting him.
"Kickapoo" was performed by Tenacious D on the December 2, 2006 episode of Saturday Night Live. The song was heavily edited to be able to played, with Jack replacing the word "fuck" with "freak" in every instance in the song. He also changed the word "balls" to "butt", in the line, "Oh the dragons balls were blazin' as I stepped into his cave."
