[edit] History

Kareela is derived from an Aboriginal word kari-kari meaning fast. [1]The name for the suburb was approved by the Geographical Names Board in 1968 and it was chosen in reference to the area’s strong south winds; this is reflected in one of the suburb's street names: Tradewinds Place. Many of the streets in Kareela are named after early winners of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. [2]

[edit] Commercial Area

Kareela has a small shopping centre located between Bates Drive and Freya Street. Shops include a Coles supermarket, a newsagent, bakery, butcher, Black Olive deli, Chicken Ace and Video Ezy. The doctor's surgery located opposite the shopping centre in Freya Street is called Kareela Family Practice.
