Joyce Smedley was a fictional Character in the British Soap Opera Coronation Street. Played by Anita Carey. Joyce was Judy Mallett's (Gaynor Faye) mother, she arrived in Coronation Street in 1996. Joyce became Cleaner at the Rovers Return and she had a couple of love interests during her time on the street-these were Alec Gilroy & Percy Sugden, but she didn't encourage the latter!. In February 1997 while walking her dog, Scamper, Joyce was knocked down and killed instantly by a car driven by Tony Horrocks.
