I don´t know if Escandón give the name to the village in honour to the city of Santander or in honour to the Province of Santander or to the diocese of Santander. I suppose the first option. But anyway the official name of the province in that moment was Cantabria, and that´s the name which should appear in the article.

The information of the origin of the name is important, but should be mentioned in another way.

Good information — you did a lot of research. I'll make the change if you haven't already done it. I assumed he named Nuevo Santander after the province, because it is provincial size rather than city size. But it could have been the city. --Rbraunwa 22:31, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
