Zé Roberto, real name José Roberto da Silva Júnior, (born July 6, 1974 in Ipiranga) is a Brazilian footballer currently playing for Bayern Munich. He is married to Luciana and has three children: Endrik, Miriá and Isabelli.[2]
He is a versatile, left-footed winger who is a deft dribbler and crosses the ball well. This earned him a starting spot in the Seleção where he played through the centre. He was part of the Brazil squad at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2006 FIFA World Cup. Zé Roberto scored Brazil's third and final goal in a man of the match performance in Brazil's second round match against Ghana in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
Zé Roberto had been before under contract with Bayern Munich until June 30, 2006. Winning a starting spot at Bayern Munich got more difficult under coach Felix Magath. Following the announcement that he would not return to Bayern Munich, he publicly criticized the club's style of play and predicted struggles if changes were not made.
On August 31, 2006, Zé Roberto signed a one-year-deal with Santos FC and helped the team to win the 2007 edition of the Campeonato Paulista in a brilliant participation, which was his first title in a Brazilian competition. His contribution not only to the team but the league has been immensely amazing.
On June 22, 2007, Bayern Munich officially announced the return of Zé Roberto on a Bosman transfer. He had completed his medical with the German giants a day before and was offered a two year contract.[3] A prerequisite for this signing was Roberto's retirement from the national side.
On February 7, 2008 Ze Roberto announced that he would not be extending his contract with Bayern Munich past the 2008/9 season and hinted at possibly moving to Major League Soccer.[4]
