Talk:John E. Sununu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is he a class 1 senator? He is noted here as a class II man: Official Senate website
[edit] How is he a "conservative Republican"?
The article refers to Sen. Sununu as a "conservative Republican", but only cites his positions contrary to the Bush administration (and other conservative Republicans). I would be very interested to see some examples of where Sen. Sununu has adopted strongly conservative positions, in addition to the existing examples where he has not done so.
Otherwise, perhaps the designation should be changed to "moderate Republican", or at least be given further elaboration?
Even though Sen. Sununu is more of a libertarian conservative then a traditional one, he is still very far to the right. He has a 0% approval rating from NARAL; has voted consistently for free trade; has an A from the NRA; has one of the highest ratings from both the NTU and ACU; and he is also one of the few republicans that were conservative enough to vote against the Prescription Plan D act. Sen.
- Yup. In 2004 Tsununu had a lifetime ACU rating of 95%. This put him among the most conservative in general, but doubly so for a New England Republican. In 2004 he opposed extending the "Assault Weapons Ban", opposed "an amendment broadening the categories covered by hate crimes to include crimes motivated by the victim's gender, sexual orientation or disability", and supported making it a criminal offense to injure or kill a fetus during the commission of a violent crime. In 2004 he received a 100% from both the John Birch Society, the American Conservative Union, the Eagle Forum, and the Christian Coalition.[1] (Considering their different interests I just sort of assumed this was impossible)--T. [edit] VP talk
journalnow.com mentions the possibility of being McCain's running mate. I only bring this up because it was mentioned on the 2008 N.H. election page. 71.243.156.198 20:44, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Global warming skeptic?
User:Texasnewbie posted the following over at Category:Global warming skeptics. I'm moving it here, as this is the most appropriate location...
- Why is Sen John E. Sununu listed as a skeptic? He has sponsered environmentally friendly legislation. He is very conservative but this does not seem to be one of his attributes. --unsigned comment by User:Texasnewbie

- He is on the list because of positions like those described by the Concord Monitor, April 2007 :
-
- Sen. John Sununu wants to see more research on climate change before he's sure about how much humans are influencing it. The position is not so different from the one he took two years ago, when he told the Monitor that he would like to see more studies before supporting a national plan to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
-
- Since then, more than 2,500 scientists from around the world have released reports saying that they are 90 percent certain that humans are contributing to warming and that ecosystems on every continent could be changed before the end of the century. Local modeling forecasts that New Hampshire's climate could feel like Atlanta's by then.
-
- "The best models out there can't calculate precisely how much is human influence and how much isn't," Sununu said last week. "But we need to put a lot of money into climate modeling and research necessary to understand how all the different greenhouse gases . . . impact long-term global temperature." ... "I think he should be paying attention to what the people in New Hampshire are saying and joining the senior senator (Judd Gregg) in acknowledging that this is a huge problem," said Ted Leach, Republican co-chairman of the Carbon Coalition, a group of businesses, community groups and activists..."At this point, there's only about three people on the planet who are denying that humans are heating our planet. Two of them are in the White House, and the other one is Sen. Sununu," said Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farm.
- Given this information about Sununu's position on climate change, would you agree that he qualifies as a skeptic? betsythedevine (talk) 23:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
