TV.com summary

Johnny Test (not to be confused with Jonny Quest) is an animated television series on Kids' WB, returning January 26. It premiered on September 17, 2005. Five months later, it was introduced to Cartoon Network UK on January 14, 2006 and then on June 5, 2006, shown every day. It also airs on Teletoon in Canada, and on Cartoon Network in the United States. The show chronicles the adventures of an average suburban boy, who wittingly plays test subject for his genius twin sisters' various experiments, reluctantly fighting evil villains in the process.

[edit] Plot

This show features an 11-year-old boy named Johnny who lives with his 13-year-old scientist twin sisters Susan and Mary in the Test residence in the fictional town of Porkbelly. Susan and Mary come up with experiments to win the heart of the next-door neighbor, Gil, but they use Johnny as a test subject for their experiments. Johnny also has a super talking dog named Dukey. Johnny likes to take Dukey places, but has to disguise him as a kid "with a rare hair disorder." Lila Test (the Mother) works like the stereotypical father and rarely has time to spend with her family, and Hugh Test (the Father) is obsessed with meatloaf and extreme cleanliness.

In the show they always find a way to say "Whoa, didn't see that coming," or "Say Wha?!" Which at one time were Johnny's "catch phrases" but are now used by most every one (his new catch phrase is "That was convenient" when some mistake of his turns out in his favor). However, the only recurring evil force at work is Eugene, who apparently changed his name to "Bling-Bling Boy", and is after a specific date with Susan, even though she has absolutely no interest in him. Other villains include The X-Treme Teen Team, who love anything that is or says "extreme", and the Mole King, who hates light.

This show has a similar visual style and tone of Nickelodeon's The Fairly OddParents, Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory or Robotboy, and The Disney Channel's Kim Possible, although the name is almost certainly a reference to Jonny Quest. The show was created by Scott Fellows, also creator and Exec Producer of Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide".

[edit] Production History

The first two seasons were produced in-house at Warner Bros. Animation. Some episodes were storyboarded by Atomic Cartoons in Canada. The merger of UPN and The WB into The CW resulted in many budget cuts for the show, and resulted in cancellation. Cookie Jar Entertainment, based in Canada, decided to take control of the show, turning it into a U.S./Canada co-production. Due to this change, the writers, storyboarders, and art crew who worked on the first season were let go, resulting in an entirely new crew managing the show. In addition, the budget of the show dropped dramatically, leading to the show being animated in Adobe Flash. The show's opening theme was later changed, with the opening being made of recycled episode footage. The show is now regarded as a Teletoon original production. Reruns were shown on Cartoon Network in the United States and Teletoon in Canada since January 7, 2008.It was revealed that Johnny Test would be replaced with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fast Forward on The CW4Kids.

[edit] Characters

  • John "Johnny" Test

A young 11-year old boy who almost always gets in trouble. He is known as the "kid with the flaming hair"/"flaming hair boy" due to the top of his blond hair having some red highlights. Because he has two genius older sisters, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and is often seen as an idiot for messing with his sisters inventions, causing trouble and mayhem. Johnny adopted Dukey from the pound many years ago, later gaining a best friend after his sisters turned him into a civilized talking dog. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X," even though it sounds almost exactly like his original name. Johnny X is a superhero that has the power of hurricane hands (speeding wind from his hands), shapeshifting, power poots (powerful farts that create fire) and (in the third season) the power to light himself on fire, sense what others are doing and to teleport. He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of a hostile rivalry. He is voiced by James Arnold Taylor.

  • Dukey Test

Johnny's talking dog and best friend. He was a very disgusting dog until Susan and Mary enhanced him. Since then, he can both fetch the paper and read it. He is often the voice of reason to Johnny, but winds up getting manipulated into supporting Johnny's crazy schemes and adventures (usually because of steak). Despite his devotion to Johnny, Dukey frequently expresses deep disdain towards Johnny's less intellegent antics, believing their situation as master and pet is reversed. His dog habits greatly annoy Johnny's sisters, to which Johnny takes deep delight in. He is also shown to have a deep love for coffee. Similar to Johnny's "Johnny X" form, Dukey also has a secret identity called "Super Pooch." When in "Super Pooch" form Dukey can fly and (in the third season) has shape shifting power, power poots sense what others are doing and to teleport. He has the power to fly as a sidekick (to Johnny) but usually crashes when landing. He is voiced by Louis Chirillo.

  • Mary Test

Mary is a 13-year old super genius and twin sister of Susan. Mary has a shirt depicting a moon, curved red hair, trapezoid glasses and a moon-shaped barrette. She has green eyes and often wears baggy blue jeans and sneakers with her trademark moon-shirt and lab coat. Mary is the more tomboyish one of the twins, has shown to be nicer than her sister, and often believes in the less scientific and more science-fictional. Like her sister, Mary harbors a deep love and obsession for the Test's nextdoor neighbor, Gil, although their attempts to attract his attention always end in failure. Liker her sister, she attends school at the Mega Institution of Geniuses. Voiced by Brittney Wilson and later Ashleigh Ball.

  • Susan Test

Susan is a 13-year old super genius and twin sister of Mary. She typically dresses more feminine than her sister, wearing a black skirt, a shirt depicting a star, square glasses, a star-shaped barrette and has straight red hair. Like her sister, Susan harbors a deep love and obsession for the Test's nextdoor neighbor, Gil, although their attempts to attract his attention always end in failure. Susan is more by-the-book than Mary, often believing rational thinking is the only way to go (causing her to regard Johnny's claim of "molemen" as blatantly unscientific.) Eugene/Bling-Bling expresses heavy interest in Susan, often causing her to be used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with him. Voiced by Maryke Hendrikse.

  • Mr. Hugh Test

The uptight, obsessive compulsive Father of Johnny, Susan and Mary, and the husband of Lila Test. He's a stay-at-home dad. Hugh's two biggest obsessions are cleaning and cooking meatloaf, which the rest of the Test family openly despises. If Johnny, Susan, and Mary mess something up, he always wants them to come back before dinner. He also always grounds them from video games, and the lab, respectively, for a month at a time for even the smallest offensive. He is voiced by Ian James Corlett.

  • Mrs. Lila Test

Mother of Johnny, Susan and Mary and the wife of Hugh Test. She is a businesswoman, though her specific profession is never explained. Mrs. Test isn't seen at home as often as the rest of the family due to her demanding job, but her family always comes first and she never misses out on vacations and family events, despite the fact she always manages to take her work with her one way or another. She is voiced by Kathleen Barr.

  • Eugene/"Bling-Bling Boy"

A recurring antagonist and friendly enemy of Johnny and Dukey, preferring to go by name of "Bling-Bling Boy" (because of his gold jewelry and watches). Most characters usually call him by his real name instead of Bling-Bling Boy, which annoys him greatly. He is a multi-millionaire with unlimited funds at his disposal. He has a crush on Susan, who doesn't reciprocate his feelings, and often resorts to evil plots or blackmail to try and force her to be his girlfriend. He occasionally teams up with Johnny and Dukey to defeat the other villains when the situation demands it. He seems to be good friends with Johnny and Dukey, despite being a main antagonist of the series. He has Johnny test some of his inventions and occasionally tricks him into doing it, similar to his sister. He has developed a catch phrase of "I'm in trouble aren't I" which is said after the authorities arrive. He is voiced by Lee Tockar.

  • Gil

A prettyboy teenager and Susan and Mary's crush, who doesn't even know they exist, or forgets they exist even though they've met many times, and even have lived next door to him since they were born. Much to the great ire of Susan and Mary, Gil considers Johnny his friend. (whenever Gil appears when Johnny is around, he shouts, "Hey, Johnny!"). He seems to be a sidekick to the Tests and once got the power to grow his hair to make extra hands. He is voiced by Andrew Francis.

  • Mr. White and Mr. Black

The Buff and Tough Secret Agents. They may be friends with Johnny, Mary and Susan, and Dukey, but since they are secret agents, they're always antagonizing them. They aren't afraid of anything (although on some occasions, that's only what they say). These two have the ability to shoot strings from their palms due to government experiments in mutant powers, although their powers aren't as advanced as the ones given by Susan and Mary Test. They resemble Agent K and Agent J from the Men in Black films. The irony in their names is Mr. White is African American and Mr. Black is caucasian. They are voiced by Scott McNeil (Mr. White) and Bill Mondy (Mr. Black).

  • Janet Nelson, Jr.

Johnny's former crush A vain, shallow and self-centered popular girl that is usually mean and inconsiderate to Johnny and appoints as a loser. She has a love-hate relationship with him, but she is too popular to express the love part. She is also extremely intelligent. Janet was also one of the reasons why Johnny would use his sister's experiments just so he could impress her. She only appears in season one and one episode in season two. She is voiced by Kathleen Barr.

  • Sissy Bladely

A girl who has a crush on Johnny but tends to hide it very well through bullying him and asserting superiority over him. Johnny also seems to have a crush on her, although he doesn't seem to be aware of it. However, the two are constantly competing against each other (e.g., when Johnny refuted Dukey's claim that he actually likes Sissy by announcing that he hates Sissy, Dukey told him, "At your age, Johnny, its the same thing."). If Sissy beats him, she'll brag about it. If Johnny wins, he'll either get caught into a situation because of it, or brag as much as her. In one episode, Johnny pretends to get used to being bullied by Sissy and they fall in love with each other along with Dukey and Missy. She seems to be the victim to the shows twists, adventures, and misadventures at the end of the episodes that she appears in. She first appears in the second season. She is voiced by Maryke Hendrikse.

  • Missy

Sissy's dog, who is to Dukey what Sissy is to Johnny. Unlike Dukey however, she is not modified in any way, unable to communicate through speech. She apparently has the ability to eat wood and barbed wire. She is voiced by Brittney Wilson.

  • General

Mr. White and Black's Boss, the General is leader of the army base stationed within Porkbelly. Loud and forgetful, he frequently takes action whenever the situation becomes too large for the Test's to maintain, although his efforts never fair any better. He is voiced by Lee Tockar.

  • Mitchel "Bumper" Randalls

A local bully who is seen picking on Johnny. He, however, has a sensitive side. He is voiced by Scott McNeil.

  • Mr. Teacher Man

Johnny's class teacher, who Johnny believes is "out to get him". Mr. Teacher Man is tough, but only because deep down, he knows that there is a great student inside of Johnny.

  • Ms. Teacher Lady

Johnny's math teacher. Her favorite student is Janet and runs the Math team.

  • Blast Ketchup

The Tiny'mon trainer that always a sidekick around with him,and he has a rivarly with Johnny Test.
