Johne Murphy born 10 November 1984 in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland is an Irish rugby union footballer who plays Full-back or Wing[1] Leicester Tigers in the Guinness Premiership. He has no relation to Leicester's Irish international fullback/wing Geordan Murphy, though they were both educated at Newbridge College. Geordan is a more subtle footballer with a quiet persona, while Johne is larger with a schoolboy character.
Murphy was called into the Ireland A side that was defeated by England Saxons on 1 February 2008.[2][3][4]
Murphy was unlucky to miss out on this years world cup training squad . Being more of a lad Murphy has not let fame encroach on his daily life. On frequent occasions he returns to his native green land of Ireland to visit his friends - he finds this helps him keep his mind off the game. Johne's nickname in school was Stunning Johne - this was for a number of reasons: 1) his looks were stunning, 2) his female friends were generally stunning, 3) his stunning action on the football field was amazing to watch, and 4) his stunning sidestep. (Please note that although Johne is no slouch, his pace is not yet stunning.)
Johne was picked up for Leicester after playing a "random" one off game for a a "Leinster u-21" side against Leicester. Geordan Murphy was driving by the club at the time and saw "Stunners" sidestep his was round the pitch - (granted even Johnee will admit the reason why he could sidestep so much was his pace was not there). Geordan took out the camera phone and immediately sent Cozza , Cockers and Backy the video to get their opinion. It was thumbs up all round - Johne was the only person to get selected and is still with the Leicester tigers.
Johne, as well as appearing for Leicester no fewer than 22 times this season as a starter has also had some time for acting. He has had a 7 second slot at Soccer AM. This is only the beginning for Stunners.
