[edit] Lost Fleet (as Jack Campbell)
Set one-hundred-plus years into an interstellar war between two different human cultures, the protagonist of the story is discovered floating in a hibernation/escape pod one-hundred years after he made a heroic 'last stand' against the enemy fleet at a famous battle. In the present, he's a renowned hero to his side and his name and actions are used to justify poor tactics and decisions. Awakened just during a secret mission that turns out to be an enemy trap, he's suddenly dropped into the fleet commander's chair and expected to live up to a legend that has grown to impossible levels.
1. THE LOST FLEET: Dauntless (June 27, 2006), the first volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
- The Alliance has been fighting the Syndics for a century - and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he had been heroically idealized beyond belief . Captain John "Black Jack" Geary's legendary exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic "last stand" in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns from survival hibernation and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics. Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance's one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic "Black Jack" legend.
2. THE LOST FLEET: Fearless (January 30, 2007), the second volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
- In Fearless, legendary war hero Captain John "Black Jack" Geary is once again faced with a seemingly hopeless situation. Recently rescued from an escape pod found floating in space after nearly a century in suspended animation, Geary is desperately trying to find a way to bring what's left of the Alliance fleet back home. In his possession is a device acquired from an enemy starship that could end the war forever. But with the entire military force of the Syndicate Worlds hot on his trail, Geary is up against impossible odds -- especially when he frees a labor camp of Alliance POWs and rescues an egomaniacal captain whose irrational machismo could doom the entire fleet."
3. THE LOST FLEET: Courageous (formerly Daring, December 18, 2007), the third volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
- Badly damaged and low on supplies, the Alliance Fleet is raiding Syndic mines for raw materials-and Captain "Black Jack" Geary hopes they can continue to remain one step ahead of their enemies. But the Syndics are the least of Geary's worries when he learns of the existence of aliens with the power to annihilate the human race.
4. THE LOST FLEET: Valiant (coming in June 24, 2008), the fourth volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
5. THE LOST FLEET: Relentless (coming in 2009), the fifth volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
6. THE LOST FLEET: Victorious (TBD), the sixth volume in the "Lost Fleet" series.
