[edit] Department of Museum Studies

John F. Kennedy University is home to one of the nation's oldest museum studies programs, founded in 1974 by Deborah Kirschman.[citation needed] In 2004, the department re-located its library, faculty offices and classrooms to the university's Berkeley campus. It offers coursework that leads to a certificate or a master's degree in museum studies, with specializations in museum education and interpretation; collections management; and administration. The department regularly sponsors lectures, workshops and other events for museum professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area and works with many Bay Area museums including the Oakland Museum of California, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Bay Area Discovery Museum and Chabot Space and Science Center to train future museum professionals.

In January 2008, California Association of Museums (CAM) announced that the University's Museum Studies program will be the recipient of the 2008 CAMMY Award in the category of "Service to the Field" for the involvement of their alumni and faculty in museum associations and their commitment to furthering and strengthening the museum field, especially in California.[citation needed]
