Wikiproject Alabama

Greetings, There are a lot of good Alabama articles which we can readily add to the project. I'm looking forward to working on the project with you guys! Вasil 13:01, 4 April 2007 (UTC) (formerly Pepto gecko)

The meal

Hi, thanks for adding the speedy deletion template on the meal. I had no idea how to get rid of the article until another editor explained it to me! --Doctor11 20:53, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

 • I saw your comment on AuburnPilot's page. JBEvans 20:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion criteria

Please familiarize yourself with WP:CSD. "Not a crystal ball" is 'not a valid reason for speedy deletion, per Wp:csd#Non-criteria. Adding invalid tags adds to the workload and accomplishes nothing. You can always nominate for Afd. Thanks much - KillerChihuahua?!? 22:27, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to VandalProof!

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, JodyB! You have now been added to the list of authorized users, so if you haven't already, simply download and install VandalProof from our main page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any other moderator, or you can post a message on the discussion page. Ale_Jrbtalk 08:18, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Signatures

Please note that your signature is not parsable, nor does it include a link to your user page nor your talk page. Anyone wishing to contact you regarding a post you made must dig through the history. In addition, there is a registered user User:Jbevans. Please consider either changing your signature to match your user name, and/or adding a link to your user or talk page. As stated in Wikipedia:Signatures, "Signing your posts on talk pages and other Wikipedia discourse (but not on articles) is not only good etiquette; it also facilitates discussion by helping other users to identify the author of a particular comment, to navigate talk pages, and to address specific comments to the relevant user(s)..." Your signature does not faciliate comunication with the correct party and indeed may lead to confusion. Let me know if you have any questions. KillerChihuahua?!? 12:39, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

 • Thanks for the information. I did not realize what was happening. I think I have it fixed now. Please do not hesitate to let me know when I can do something better. JBEvans 12:51, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
Much better, thanks! Now people trying to talk to you will be able to find you! KillerChihuahua?!? 15:42, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Reply

Hello,
This is in response to your edit in my talk page. There is a sentence, in your message which says: If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. My edit was a valid one, and should not have been reverted, and I had given valid edit summary. Please look into my edit and remove your message from my talk page, and revert your own edit from the page you reverted my edit. Thanks. - KNM Talk 23:01, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

 • I corrected the message. It was my error and I apologize.JBEvans 23:07, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Why did you revert my restoration of the link on the Lotus Notes page?

Someone removed a link on the Lotus Notes page, claiming that the linked page contained spyware. The link has been on the Lotus Notes page for a very long time. It has been the subject of controversy before for its content, but nobody has previously claimed it contains spyware. I visited the page, and it does try to generate a pop-up, which my browser blocked but I allowed it. I run two spyware filters, and I was not warned of any threats. I restored the link, and in the comment on the edit I wrote "If you think it's spyware, please give more information". You reverted my edit, removing the link again, with no explanation. Please explain your reason. Thank you. rhsatrhs

Thanks for the clarification. The word "sucks" is indeed a red flag, but the consensus of the majority of contributors to the Lotus Notes page is that keeping that link on the page helps keep the page from becoming an IBM commercial, and furthermore the link is notable since that page has actually been cited in several published articles about attitudes of users towards the Lotus Notes user interface. So we grit our teeth and keep it. Rhsatrhs 02:30, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: WikiProject Alabama

Hi JodyB! Yes, the class support for the template WikiProject Alabama is now live. It was quite an undertaking and I had to garner a bit of help from MECU and Nmajdan. I still need to add some documentation on either the project page or the template; I haven't yet decided which is best. Nonetheless, to use the template, simply add to the top of any Alabama related talk page. If you wish to rate the article, add a rating such as . Currently, I've added support for the following ratings: FA, A, B, GA, Start & Stub. When you add a quality rating, they're not case sensitive.

As an aside, you're current signature does not correctly point to your new user page. It's currently pointing to User:JBEvans. You might want to give that a looksee so everyone can respond in a more direct way. I had to jump through a couple of hoops to find you. IMHO, I'm glad you changed the moniker. I much prefer a pseudonym for nut prevention! Вasil | talk 18:58, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip about the links on my user page. That's been broken awhile, but it's been resolved. Вasil | talk 21:30, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

April, thank you very much for your support in my successful RfA.

I am thankful and humbled by the trust that the community has placed in me,
and I welcome any comments, questions or complaints that you may have.
Again, thank you for your support, and happy editing!

Mobile, Alabama assessment

Could you take a minute to explain the start assessment evaluation you made of the Mobile, Alabama article (as it related to the quality scale)? Thanks.  :-) /Blaxthos 23:36, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: assessment

JB, The bot that generates those images only runs at 03:00 GMT (I abhore the new acronym UDT). Most likely you've added those entries after that time ;-). I'm running the bot manually now and we'll see if it gets updated. I'll keep you posted. Вasil | talk 21:03, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

That seems to be the ticket! It's still running, but it has 750+ articles and counting. BTW, it seems you may have missed some of the vandalism left by Damn Republicans. Look at the top of your user page. Вasil | talk 21:19, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

Your AWB is running amok

Whoa whoa whoa! The WP:Alabama tag belongs on the talk page, not the article page, as I'm sure you know. Might want to get AWB on the same page :) FCYTravis 01:30, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

 1. Fixing it now. My error. Thanks for letting me know. JodyB 01:35, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
No problem. :) FCYTravis 01:39, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again and especially for your help. I think they are all revereted. Thanks for fixing many of them. JodyB 01:50, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
There is a WP:Alabama tag on 3 Doors Down; they're from Mississippi. I'll rv it, but you might want to see how the bot's tagging what it's tagging. MSJapan 02:56, 15 April 2007 (UTC)
Now I see! I didn't realize that was there, because no one in the band is from Mobile, and I didn't check the cats. Fixed. MSJapan 03:11, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

MartinBot Warning

Did you know MartinBot is well, a bot..... I think you had a misclick in VP -- Tawker 04:33, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Misclicks do occur. If that's the case, I apologize. JodyB 09:46, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Alabama

Hi there and welcome to the Alabama Project. It's good to have someone with your experience on board. I am originally from Tuscaloosa and live now near Mobile. Roll Tide! JodyB 00:30, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks. Looks like an exciting project and I'll help out in any way I can. I should add, though, that I went to Auburn. Hope you won't hold that against me :-). Best, --Alabamaboy 00:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Your warning of User:MartinBot

Hi, I noticed that you warned User:MartinBot of vandlaism here: [1]. I removed it as it seemed like a mistake warning. If there is a legitimate problem with the robot than you should report it at WP:ANI otherwise just be more careful. Hope Vandalproof is working well for you! Thanks! -- Hdt83 Chat 04:05, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

AWB Problems

Please double check your edits before saving them with AWB. You're adding redundant WikiProject Alabama templates. See this edit and this edit for examples. I'm sure there are plenty, I just don't have the time to dig around (first two random contribs I checked are errant). I know the AWB guys are pretty strict about users who don't preview and verify each edit before saving -- be careful. /Blaxthos 03:30, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Continued AWB abuse

From WP:AWB:

 • Avoid making insignificant minor edits such as only adding or removing some white space, moving a stub tag, converting some HTML to Unicode, removing underscores from links (unless they are bad links), or something equally trivial. This is because it wastes resources and clogs up watch lists.

Some of your recent edits are clearly in violation of this policy. I can't stress enough the importance of following the rules. Repeated abuse of these rules could result, without warning, in the software being disabled. /Blaxthos 14:31, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

AWB and VP

How many "mistakes" and "misclicks" should we assume are good faith errors? I see you've warned bots several times, and continue to violate WP:AWB rules. These are not tools for you to use to increase your edit counts, and the pattern I've seen really detracts from my ability to assume good faith regarding your behavior. I strongly urge you to reconsider these sorts of actions. Thanks. /Blaxthos 14:34, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

I responded on his page. I have made errors but no one should suggest a lack of good faith. I have corrected any and every error I made. JodyB 15:45, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
I think my major concern is that you're running upwards of five or six edits per minute with AWB when placing tags or making cleanup corrections without double checking your work... the edits you're doing are often prohibited by AWB guidelines (or redundant, as in the Alabama wikiproject templates) and it's pretty clear at that rate that you're not previewing and double checking your edits, and just clicking "save" every time it comes up (clearly prohibited). Just be a little more careful/discerning before blanket clicking save.  :-) /Blaxthos 16:07, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Image copyright

I do not believe that you are the author or hold the license to these images. Did you take these images yourself? If so, can you upload a higher resolution please? Or, did you get these from a website? MECUtalk 12:13, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

 1. Sir, please read the following posts 2, 3, 4, 5. That should answer the question. But I will say it again: I made the photograph and I am the owner. They were not taken from any website. I can upload a higher resolution photo if you would answer my question posted on your talk page about 6 hours before you posted this remark. How can I be clearer? I sent the email as instructed.

Now please allow me to ask you a question. What is you basis for suggesting I am dishonest? Please be specific. 2. Under what condition did you decide not to apply WP:AGF? 3. Why have you chosen not to answer my questions posed of you on your talk page? I have done every thing you have asked and I have attempted to gain a better understanding of how to do this in the future. Please tell me exactly what I can do to prove my ownership? JodyB 17:28, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

The answer to your question, as I answered above: Please uploader larger resolutions. There is no reason to upload small resolutions of images, as the software and reduce the size for an article automatically. I have added the OTRS permission from the e-mail you sent. To help reduce the chance of this in the future, upload large resolutions. Most images that are copyright violations (as I suspected wrongfully) are generally taken from the internet and are small in resolution. Further, the license you chose is commonly used by people who don't understand copyrights. These three items combined (small resolution, multiple license, and specific license) caused me to believe these items may not be free, which is why I listed them as I did. It is not an insult to you, your images, or anything related to you efforts. I have added the OTRS ticket (and replied to your e-mail). Again, I urge you to uploader larger resolutions and please accept my apologies for any harm done. Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia and working through this issue. MECUtalk 17:57, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Your apology is accepted. JodyB 18:17, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for understanding and uploading the larger resolution images. I have withdrawn the PUI disputed claim and tags from the images. MECUtalk 19:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: WikiProject Alabama Assessments

Hi JB! This weekend's OK, so far. Hope yours is going well also. The assessment table is automatically updated but I'm not sure if we can auto-update the main project page to display/list articles by class. I looked around and most of the other state projects appear to be manually listing lists of FA's and GA's. Regardless, If you'll tell me where and what project you based the Alabama project on, I'll go take a peek and see if they automated theirs. If they did it, we can too! Warning vandals

Hello. I'm in agreement with the recent revert you made on Beer pong. Not sure if you already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Best regards, --AW 16:21, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey

Hello. Your user page was vandalised 3 times in a short period of time, all by a user named user: Afsdlkajshhhdlfhjkalasdfsdfhjklasdfhjkl. If you're an admin, you might want to block him/her, and if you're not, report him/her.

Sorry, forgot to sign every comment I made everywhere tonight. Oh, boy... Mattbash 01:46, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Not a problem, thanks for correcting the vandalism. I'm not an admin but he is blocked now. JodyB 01:47, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

AWB issue

Hey Jody, I noticed you tagged a couple articles using AWB and it looks like the template may be loading incorrectly. See here and here. Just those two. Good work with the tagging; lots more to go but a large percent is done. - auburnpilot talk 20:25, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

 • Hey, thanks for the heads-up. I posted the question to the Kingbotk plug-in page and he's trying to help me figure it out. You guys bear with me, I'll figure it out probably before St. Nick wins his first game! JodyB 22:48, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Question about templates

Hi Jody,

I started toying with templates when I needed a generic one for NCAA Athletes. I tried looking at the template documentation, but found it severely lacking. If I'm ever made an Admin, I'll look into resolving that and other doc issues!

With permission from the author, I took Infobox NBA Player and copied it into a Wiki Sandbox and started playing with it. Infobox NCAA Athlete, is my result and which is now used in ~250 articles. I had to ask for help here and there and still learn more every day. But after many trials and errors (and people continuously deleting my sandbox) I created a template that I'm very proud of and which I believe is far better than the original.

So...to belatedly answer your question, I think the tact your taking is the best method. Get one and play with it. Ask questions! To prevent others from mucking up your work and to make it easier to modify or test, I suggest setting up a few sandbox subpages of your own. Just in case you're not familiar with the process, create links on your main page like User:JodyB/Sandbox1 & User:JodyB/Sandbox2. When you click those pages, they'll become active and you can use one to create or copy a template, and the other to test your template.

Another tip - try to make your templates as flexible as possibile so user friendly - i.e., make most, if not all parameters optional and don't hard code parameters to be wikilinks (let the user decide to link or use short names).

I realize this is probably far more info than you asked for but these techniques have helped me a lot. I'll be happy to help in any way. If I can't help, we'll bug MECU or NMajdan who are both admins and very good at templates. Вasil | talk 14:34, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

How's your template work coming? Вasil | talk 00:25, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: Alabama poster

Thank you sir, for those kind comments! I don't know if it will scale down enough to use on smaller templates, but if it doesn't, I'll come up with something with a similar theme. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Вasil (talkcontribs) 22:58, 29 April 2007 (UTC).
