The 1971 Calder Cup Playoffs of the American Hockey League began on April 7, 1971.[1] The six teams that qualified played best-of-7 series in the first round. The winner of the series between the two division champions in the first round advanced directly to the Calder Cup Final while the other two first round winners played each other in a best-of-7 series. The winner and the team that received the bye played a best-of-7 series for the Calder Cup. The Calder Cup Final ended on May 1, 1971 with the Springfield Kings defeating the Providence Reds four games to zero to win the Calder Cup for the fourth time in Springfield history, and the only championship while the team was named the Kings.[2]
[edit] Playoff seeds
After the 1970–71 AHL regular season, the top three teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. The Baltimore Clippers finished the regular season with the best overall record.[3]
[edit] Eastern Division
- Providence Reds - 69 points
- Montreal Voyageurs - 68 points
- Springfield Kings† - 66 points
[edit] Western Division
- Baltimore Clippers - 89 points
- Cleveland Barons - 85 points
- Hershey Bears - 72 points
†The Springfield Kings defeated the Quebec Aces by a score of 4-3 in overtime in a one game playoff to determine the last playoff spot in the East Division.
[edit] Bracket
In each round, the higher seed receives home ice advantage, meaning they receive the "extra" game on home-ice if the series reaches the maximum number of games. There is no set series format due to arena scheduling conflicts and travel considerations.[4]
